I am a 48 yr old woman.  I have been coloring my hair for 15 yrs.  But, recently I have noticed that it is getting harder and harder to keep that gray out.  Soooo, I want to let it go total gray.  Ok, now my problem is....My hair is long.  My mother said I should cut my hair short, then color it blonde so that when the hair is growing out then the color will not be so drastic.  If I leave it brown it will be so two toned it isn't funny.  Half gray Half brown.  Does anyone have any suggestions to let my hair go gray without the drastic color?  Should I color it blonde?  My skin tone is olive and tanned.  My eyes are brown, eye brows and lashes are black.  I am a native american indian.   thank You for your help.

argh I replied but it didn't post. Will try to do it again!

Without a pic it's hard to know if you should go blonde. I went blonde due to lots of grays (premature gray, I am under 40). I had long black hair and eventually had to cut it to go blonde faster, which I would now recommend to anyone wanting to do this.

If you decide to go blonde, I suggest you cut as short as you are comfortable with. Then use a colro lift (not bleach yet) to see how much color you can remove and how light you can get. Then either dye your darkest shade at that point and go lighter in stages, or just bleach it out to go blonde.

Good luck!

Thank you.  I was thinking the same thing.  What is a colro lift?

It's a nonbleach treatment for your hair that lifts artificial color. Folks here have recommended colorzap and color fix. You can find them online and at beauty stores like Sally's. You may want to do a search on the forum because I think one is gentler than the other, but I didn't use them (big mistake) just went straight to bleach so I am not as familiar with them as others are.

One member here has a great page about it, I hope she posts!
