In your initial post you asked about the hair. I've heard that it is pretty good hair compared to other beauty supply store hair. Malibu is in Cali. Maybe she can introduce you to her stylist who does her sew-ins. You can find a better quality of hair that will probably last longer for a reasonable price.
Krimsa, I believe the original malaysian uses thread only but many stylists have tweaked it to make it more suitable for certain hair textures. Adding bands is one version of it, I believe it's what your stylist did to your hair.
Thats what Im thinking also. She used thread and then added bands for better grip. She did use a cornrow but did not make it very tight and used no extra braiding hair. She seemed to feel that an important part of a sew in was NOT using any ol thread and that it NEEDED to be braiding thread specifically for that purpose to be used on hair.

Ok, so I just gave them a call to ask them what their method of their attachment is. As he explained it, it's "based" off of the braid and sew method, except there are no braids involved. They use a tension strap which replaces the braid, and then they sew the weft onto the tension strap. They have 3 different packages that they e-mailed to me (I'll include them at the bottom of this post). I asked him how it is for thin hair, and he said that it's actually better for thin hair because the straps are smaller than what a braid would be and cause les breakage.
Here is the package service that they are offering:
Package 1 is $235 which adds extra thickness and length to your look.
Package 2 is $470 and is perfect for achieving almost any look between 16-19 inches in length.
Package 3 is $705 and is designed to give you maximum length and volume.We highly recommend this package for clients who have short hair and want to go long.
Cut and blend is $55
Maintenance to be done every 8-10 weeks depending on your hair.The cost for maintenanceis $85 per row.You will have 1 to 3 rows.
So what do you guys think... is this a load of BS or not?

If you're asking for opinions, here's mine.. I don't think it's BS, I just think they are being far too vague.. I would have to have much more detail before I let a stylist do something to my head.. I want to feel comfortable that I'm not doing something that might cause damage to my hair.. IMO I don't think they've provided enough detail.. If it were me, I would PERSONALLY want to know exact details..
I've been wearing sew-in weaves for years, and if it were me, I would need to understand how this strap is attached if there are no braids involved. Can he provide you with pictures of this strap or this method being installed??

I would definitely want to see these bands in person in someone's hair. I think it's great when new techniques come out but... I would suggest that you ask them to see them do a maintenance on a client and ask her her opinion on it. That's a lot of money for something that may not work.
Unless you really, really just want to try this technique, I think you should pass them by. Those prices are ridiculous for a sew-in. I think you should pm Malibu and get her stylist's name, buy your own wefts and go from there. I believe her stylist only charges $25 per weft.
I got curious, and made a call.. The gentleman who answered the phone was very nice, and more than willing to explain in detail how their method is done..
The method 17th & Glam uses is a variation of the EZ Weft system (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Her0_xfQa1Y)
The strap they use has microrings on it.. It is attached to your head by pulling some of your hair through the mircrorings and clamping them closed to hold in place... Then the hair weft is sewn to the strap.
You also have a choice of using their hair or supplying your own.. Of course they recommend their own hair, but if you bring your own, then the basic package is $85 (versus $235).

Now that HOW has been established, lemme offer my opinion on this method.. I personally think that most of these EZ Weft type of methods put more stress on your hair as there is only a little bit of your hair holding up the entire weight of the weft.. Basically in a regular braided (or even one of the many Malaysian variations) install the weight of the hair is more evenly distributed across the entire row. Before I took the plunge, I would personally want to talk to some of the long time clients and get some feedback..
I would look into some alternatives as a backup as well.. You're in Orange County, I'm sure you don't want to drive to the San Fernando Valley just to get your hair done.. Craigslist has a TON of stylists listed in the OC.. (Look up these terms -- "weave", "sew-in", or "sew in" to get good results)

Sounds more like Mokipono's braiding method.. The Malaysian methods don't involve braids at all..

Don't get me wrong, I really appreciate all your help. I was really confused when he was telling me about the process, so since I live fairly close to them, I'll pop in to see exactly how the process is done. I was looking for reviews from people online, but I couldn't find anything. I'm very "hands on" in the way that I learn things, so that's the only way i'm going to be able to really know what the heck they're doing.

No problem.. I would definitely drop in.. I'm of the mindset that
sometimes you really do need to SEE how you will be spending your money
before you do it.. Plus you want to be comfortable that you will like
the result, and that your hair will be healthy and protected..
Malibu is in the SF valley.. Unless you REALLY wanna make that 1 hour
drive, I would check out Craigslist and search for stylists in Orange
County.. (I found over 100 listings in a quick search for "extensions")

Yep most of those EZ Weft methods seem like they would be hard on the hair.. There is only a small amount of hair holding up the entire weight of the weft.. That's why I said earlier that I'm not crazy about them..

She braids my hair with braiding hair (human hair).
A girlfriend of mine uses the EZWEFT method with no problems at all. They definitely need to pull more hair through those rings though on that video. She hasn't had any damage and it's a heck of a lot faster than most of the techniques out there. I believe that there are enough rings on the wefts to balance out the weight of the wefts, if not you could always sew on a few more if you like.
