Thats actually what I am doing now. I dont have any braids and only a track held together with rubber bands and then the wefts are sewn to that with the thread. I finally had someone explain the process to me. It holds quite nicely but Im not certain if it would work on every type of hair. I also have a fair amount of hair.

You can sew in a weave without braiding...just make tracks with shrinkies or links.  Works great...I like it much better than tape.

Cool. Good to know. I was thinking of this. Just something totally different and it would nice not to worry about texture matches and all that if all the hair is covered. Maybe...

Yes you can use a weave to change your entire look.. Whether or not you would have to dye and/or perm your hair to match depends on if you are doing a full weave with no hair out at all or if you are doing a full weave with some hair left out to blend..

Obviously if you have brown stick straight hair and want to put in blonde curly hair, and you do a full weave where you  leave some of your hair out, you would have to do something to your own hair to make it look natural.. It could be as simple as dying your hair to match the color and curling the hair to match the curl pattern or you could dye and perm your hair to match..

The sew-ins aren't permanent hair extensions. The sew-ins and tapes last about the same amount of time. It has the same feel and looks just as natural as sew-ins. I think if you want to install it yourself it's easier than sew-ins if you don't already know how to cornrow. Some girls also use tape and Liquid Gold or LG only for their installs. It's just a personal preference. Neither is better than the other.

Here's an example of tapes, you will also want to do a quick search on it http://talk.hairboutique.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=57392

Three vendors that I've liked and used for curly hair and have excellent prices and customer service are www.mymaneattractions.com , www.remyhairtoday.com and www.perfectlocks.com  Wagman primus has a good reputation also but I can't personally vouch for them and so does Extensions Plus.

What kind of substitute hair are you referring to? Can you give me your recommendation and I probably wouldn't want tape because I want it permanent and I would assume tape isn't permanent or as natural looking/feeling...

 Hi teleca,
It's not necessary to buy virgin hair to have great quality hair that lasts a long time. Properly processed hair can be just as beautiful and long lasting. It's far less expensive than Russian and matches just as well. It can be colored to match your hair color and processed to match your texture. Virgin hair can also naturally match your texture.
Many forum members use the tape method to install their wefts and have had great success with that technique. They do it themselves but you can also have it installed at a salon. The sew-in is just one of the many techniques used to install wefts.

I needed to add to this.. Not all full weaves braid all of your hair away.. Some full weaves leave out some of your natural hair around the perimeter or at the crown out which will be used to blend your own hair into the extensions and/or to give you some styling versatility (ponytails, buns, etc.)

As for hair vendors see the link in my siggy.. I have a list of vendors on my personal website you can check out. HTH..

I ordered the hair separate and then brought it to someone to do the sew in. What you can do is check out good Indian/Asian hair vendors and get some samples and try to match to your texture as best you can. If you want hair that will last a long time and go through many installs, then I advise looking for virgin or "remi" quality hair. Get good stuff and be prepared for it to be expensive. Make sure you go to someone reputable or ask on here for advise or someone that has purchased the hair an had good luck with it. Also, you want to avoid silicone coated hair if you are looking for longevity. Good luck.

WOW! that is great info, so did you buy the hair from someplace else and then get it put in by a salon or did they determine what hair you needed and then put it in?

Do you know of any hair companies that you can refer?
So I will look into Indian hair some more because I want the best hair available I dont care price I want it to not tangle or be lacking in quality!

Questions are cool. That’s what the forum is for.

A sew in weave, at least the kind I have is the entire weft sewn around the back of my head and the longest ones coming up over my temples. I’m wearing 3 wefts right now so they lay in three levels if that makes sense. What I have is called a "partial weave" meaning the wefts have been sewn up under my natural hair which falls over the tops of the wefts so you cant see them. In that case the hair needs to blend so texture match is crucial. If you do a full weave, all of your natural hair is braided and the wefts are sewn to the braids. In that case you could wear any hair you wanted because your natural hair would be completely concealed. You can do it either way. I have never tried a full weave but was thinking I might for fun at some point using really curly hair or blond or something wild and different. As far as how weaves feel. When you first get them done, they can be a little tight feeling but that normally goes away in about 2 days unless you have a very tender scalp. You can take a cotton ball and dab witch hazel on your scalp if it’s very irritated by it for some reason but it feels like nothing more than a little string around your head and you get used to it. I can wear my hair up or down or even in a high pony tail because the wefts are black and just blend in with the dark brown hair. You can feel them with fingers but really can’t see unless you were to dig around with a flashlight or something lol.

As far as the cost to maintain a weave, it varies but mine is only about $150 every 2 months or so when I go to get it redone. That includes a full take down, hair wash and treatment, trim and then they sew me back up. Prices will vary but its reasonable compared to strand by strand methods. The hair I’m currently wearing is Russian Virgin in 20 inch straight dark brown and it was expensive as hell. However, it’s the most fantastic, healthy, shiny, bouncy, natural, non tangly hair I have ever worn and it feels and looks the same now as the day it was installed. So that’s the trade off really. you can spend a lot of money and have the hair last and last or spend not as much money for hair that may not be the ideal but if you plan on swapping out a lot, hey no problem. You can always have nice hair. That’s what a lot of celebs do. They simply buy new hair as they need it. That is your choice really and your budget. Hope this helps.

You are so great! I really appreciate all the info it is invaluable for me. I will look into the weave! When sewing in the wefts do they do it strand by strand or a long straight weft across the back of the head? I wear the clip ins and they aren't to comfy because I can feel all the weight in one area and I cant put my hair up or really do any thing with it because it is not strand by strand installed extensions. Are yours strand by strand and do you feel them on your scalp when sleeping? Sorry for all the que. It just seems you really know about the subject and that seems to be hard to find. After this I will stop the Q.Q.Q. :) LOL

Thanks again

No I have straight hair naturally. It’s a fine, soft texture but I have a fair amount of it. It’s somewhat contradictory on my head! So I can wear Indian or Asian hair if I like and it will be passable, however my personal closest texture match has been Virgin Russian hair. This would be considered Euro hair, though there can be blends and it can get confusing buying hair.

From the way you have described your hair as thick and curly, I don’t think Russian would be the greatest match for you because it tends to be soft, non fluffy and not in a tight curl pattern. You can find wavy in a virgin state.

Let’s just be clear. Indian, Asian, Euro can ALL come in a Virgin and non virgin state. Virgin hair will be more expensive normally. What it means is the hair was essentially grown and then cut from the donor’s head, end of story. It was not exposed to any kind of chemical processes prior to install. The hair will be its natural color in this state; however you can always color it yourself or have the vendor do it. Virgin hair will normally take color nicely as that will be its first chemical treatment so it won’t destroy it to have that done. You just want to make sure it’s gently processed and good quality color was used. In my case, I didn’t even have mine colored and am wearing the Russian in a dark brown which matches my color perfectly and why do a chemical process if you don’t need it?

There are many different ways to attach extensions to the hair. I have worn, bonds, fusion, micro rings, pinch braids and now finally a sew in. The sew in has been my absolute favorite and the price is right. The nice thing about a sew in is you wont have to deal with slipping bonds which can be annoying. You simply need to maintain your weave and get it redone depending on how fast your hair grows out.

If I was you, I would try to get many free samples of different hair types and textures so you can physically hold it up to your own hair and see how it looks and feels. A lot of Indian/Asian vendors will send you those free. Also one Russian vendor will that I know of if you just want to see it and get an idea on the texture difference.

No extension method is 100% damage free in my opinion. Its just that some are much more gentle than others and there are many variables like your hair health at the onset, your care routine while wearing extensions, the products you use, how long do you leave the extensions in without maintenance, etc etc. So far I have had the very least amount of damage from a sew in weave and in fact my natural hair has grown while wearing it. On my last removal, the stylist was combing my hair out and it was down to the middle of my back and looked fuller than it ever has! So I think there might be some truth in the assertion that weaves (when cared for properly) can actually protect the natural hair and promote new growth.

I’m biased though and LOVE weaves! hehehe. So please check out ALL the methods since you also have a different hair type you are dealing with. Good luck!

Euro hair is usually a finer texture. Indian or Asian hair is normally courser in texture and blends better with curly or thicker hair in most cases. However I am a big fan of virgin hair as that has worked the best for me. I recommend that you look for hair designated as "remi" or cuticle aligned. Avoid extension hair that has been coated with silicones unless you plan on swapping hair out very quickly. This has been my personal experience and I have worn both Indian and European hair textures.

Thanks so much Metalgirl for the wonderful advice! :)

I will look into all that info on Google...
I have a few Que. and if you have the time I would love your advice on the below...

What is your opinion about Indian hair, another member suggested it?

Also what method would be the least damaging for my hair type?

Does it irritate or is it noticeable to sleep on them?
I would think the attachment device might touch the scalp and irritate?

Could you recomend anyone or salon in the Vancouver/Portland area of Oregon?

THanks so much any help is really appreciated on this issue...

Dreamcatchers are just microrings.  There's nothing special about them.  I have talked to the company at hairshows and saw their product.  They use European hair which tends to be a straight silky texture and it would not match your curly texture.

Also, your thick, curly shoulder length hair is one of the hardest types of hair to get it to blend into hair extensions without getting the mushroom head look.  Wefted hair, since it goes on the head as 'curtains' of hair around the head, it gives much better coverage to thick, curly hair.  When hair is curly and thick, using any type of strand application is more challenging to get it to blend in and look seamless and natural.

I think you'd have the best chance of success with wefts that can be either sewn in, bonded in, or taped in with Protac.

Good luck!
