I sympathize with your problem, I have a similar one after getting a perm, which severely damaged my hair. I've heard many good things about Redken Anti-Snap, a leave-in conditioner that's supposed to reduce breakage.
There is a product out at the moment and it is ranked #1 in hair reconstructors. It is a protein reconstructor and you can use it once a week. Now remember if your hair has too much protein it can dry out. It is called K-Pac and its made by Joico. You should be able to get it at any salon or they may even be able to order it for you. :) Tahni

Protein treatments and conditioners are NOT the same thing. An overdose of protein, like in Redken CAT serum, can make your hair stiff and brittle. Limit it to once a week, and get a good, deep, moisturizing conditioner for frequent use. Too much of that can't hurt your hair.
Right now I'm using Artec Smoothing Shampoo and conditioner for my highlighted hair. Leave the hair dryer alone for a while too....

Sorry your hair is breaking off. Yes you can do to much protein. Usually too much protein will make hair become very brittle and it sounds as if your hair has gotten to that point. Protein treatments should probably be used two times a month and in between moisturing treatments should be used. Your hair need moisture especially now that it is highlighted. Buy a good moisturing shampoo and a good moisturizing conditioner. I myself like Therapy Shampoo and Humectress conditioner by Nexxus. One thing you might want to make sure you do is trim your ends and don't use alot of heat (curling irons) for awhile. Let me know if anything helps O.K. Good luck! Forest

After a Redken Shades disaster (way too dark) I had my hair highlighted 2 weeks later back to blonde, and have been conditioning it regularly and doing a couple (sometimes three) protein treatments a week. All of a sudden I'm noticing a lot of breakage and thinning. My hair is very fine and stick straight, and not very thick to begin with - at the rate that it's breaking off, I'm going to end up bald! Is this due to so much color processing or can too many protein treatments cause it? If I don't condition heavily I have horrible tangles, and I thought the protein treatments would help nurse it back to health. Any suggestions? Thanks.
