After a gazillion years of having bangs I have decided to grow them out. Mine are about mid-eye at this point, just long enough to be annoying. Any suggestions as what to do in the interim? My hair is straight, shoulder length, no layers. Help.

Hi,

Yes, growing bangs is a hard one. I do it over and over and then chop them off. Since it is the only part of my hair that I cut other than trim I play with my bangs.

Cool things to ease the growing out pain that have worked for me:

1. Headbands to hold them back off my forehead.
2. Curling iron. If they are not too long some curls will always shrink them temporarily.
3. Butterfly clips. I like to make 4-5 little one inch twists across my forehead and hold the hair back with the little clips. Works and looks like I am trying to be contemporary with my hair.
4. Crisscross parting. Easy to do but the key is on DRY hair.
5. Part in the middle and clip the two big sides of the bangs back.

One other thing I do that makes it harder in the long term but harder short term is to actually let the edges grow into the rest of the hair and then have the very middle of the bangs carefully trimmed to not go longer than the eyebrows. Unfortunately you have to bite the bullet at some point and let them grow too.

I will also cheat and use a volume enhancer on my bangs to make them fuller and less likely to go into my eyes. Gel works too. You can slick them back.

Hope that helps.

Best wishes,
Karen
