I don`t want muddy lowlights!!!! Help!

Hi! I color my hair extra light ash blonde. Natural color is light brown, I want to get lowlights, but I was told they will make my hair look like the color of mud. Would it be better to color my hair all brown then highlight instead of getting the lowlights? I don`t want to do alot of damage.
