I have no idea how to use hot rollers but I can offer some advise. Why don`t you just get a curling iron or just regular rollers instead? That`s the only thing I can think of that would help.
I like you more than ice-cream!

Hot rollers give lots of curl and body, but not as much as a wet set. They are made to be used on thoroughly dry hair. Let the rollers heat to their full potential before using them. This means turning them on well in advance. Some sets offer a steam option you can use for slightly more curl. However, make sure the hair is dry before removing the rollers. For the most curl, let the rollers cool while they are still in your hair. For less curl or if your hair curls easily, take them out after a few minutes. The rule is, as with other rollers, small rollers and sections equal more curl. I find it works best to place the roller near the scalp and slowly move it to the ends. This smooths the hair out and makes it easier for me to get the ends started on the roller. The ends of the rollers should be cool and placing your fingers there should eliminate any burns. Good luck and happy curling!

I`ve been using hot rollers for years. My hair is so thick, I use 2 sets of rollers. Use larger rollers on the top layers, smaller rollers on the bottom layers, unless you want curly curly hair, then use the smaller ones allover. First, take a piece of hair, start the roller about halfway down it, leave about 2 inches below the roller and take that hair and wrap it around the roller a couple of times, before working your way up. It`s harder to roll starting at the ends. Does that make sense? I spray each strand w/ hairspray before putting it on a roller, it won`t slip as easy. Try the velvet coated rollers, they don`t burn.

Kate,

that is exactly how i rolled mine -- used to roll my hair almost every day in the 80s.

when I did my ends rolling them that way that u suggested, it kind of protected them from being dried out.
I didn`t have much luck getting the velvet ones to cooperate. I also wore a pr of thin knit gloves (i was in the marching band) when I rolled my hiar to protect my fingers from getting burned.

I also had a scarf I put over the rollers to hold the weight (I was rolling waist length hair) so I didn`t get a headache.
