Hi all,
 
I am currently in the clip in hair phase of my life but as Summer approaches and vacations loom, I am considering a sew in weave.
I have a couple of questions.
1. I have a lot of hair, but, is a silky fine texture of Caucasion hair. I mean , there is just no coarseness to my hair at all. (When I had microlinks, they started sliding out within a day.) Is there a special kind of braiding that would work better for my texture of hair? Does it have a name that I can ask for?
2. Are there any tutorials on do it yourself braiding? I am big on doing it myself if there is a way.
 
Well, there isn't as much info. out on the sew ins as compared to the glue in (Tried that, didn't work real well for me) If anyone has any suggestions, they are all appreciated.

Hey Krystal, I have fine hair and I've been really happy with the sew in method. My hair along with synthetic hair aka braiding hair is used to make the braid. I haven't had a problem with slippage.

As for tutorials I think Mokipono created one and has a video. She's a member here.

Thanks Malibu for remembering me.
I have a mini demo out on my website. It's a good method for those who have silky hair that slides out of the cornrows.

Malibu....just curious...I read where you said you have naturally curly hair.  Do you straighten your hair or only wear it curly???   I would like to have something a little more permanent (I have clip ins) but I straighten my curly hair almost daily. 

 
 Is there a video that shows how they sew in wefts?

Hey Gatorfan, I wear my hair curly. Occasionally I do straighten it but I'm trying to keep heat away for the most part. If you want a permanent method but you're concerned about how to straighten your hair I would suggest getting curly extension hair and straightening your hair and the extension hair. It's really not as much of a PITA as it sounds. And then if you don't feel like straightening your hair you can just leave it curly. ya know?

that sounds exactly what I'm looking for.  I like my hair curly sometimes and don't mind straightening it but was curious how the extensions hold up when pulling the hair straight and using the flat iron.  I'm assuming that the sew in is more durable than the glue and tape with the pulling and flat iron.  Thanks for the info.  Also, who would I contact to do this sew in?  My hairdresser doesn't do extensions, only color and cut (old family friend that does great color work).

Yeah, just be careful when you're blow drying or flat ironing because you don't want to tug on your extension hair since it would pull your own (just like clip ins). Start from the bottom and just don't be reckless.

What state are you in? You can do a search on craigslist for "hair braiders" or "weave" ummmmm hmmm "extensions" will get you a lot of GL / fusion type people but you can still try that key word. And then I would call them and ask if you can stop by to meet and show your hair. I always emphasize my concern about the tightness factor. When they're braiding your hair it should not hurt. It may be sore for a day or two but it's shouldn't hurt.

You can also check BHM to see if someone posted a person they like in your area.
