QuoteReplyTopic: finding a stylist Posted: August 16 2001 at 4:20pm
I just moved to a new city and was wondering if anyone could give advice on finding a good stylist. I know word of mouth is the best way, but I know almost no one here. I am in desperate need of a trim and I don`t want to resort to Supercuts! Any advice? Thanks. The city I live in is not large so there are no well known salons like you would find in a large city.

Stop somebody you see with a good-looking hairstyle and ask her who cuts her hair. It could be anybody you see, such as a neighbor, somebody at the grocery store, wherever. That worked for me after I asked a neighbor, and the same woman still cuts my hair 15 years later. Interestingly enough, that neighbor moved 1 1/2 hours away but still comes back to that same stylist, so we keep up with each other by sharing things with the stylist, who then passes it on! Good luck!!

Oh, I should add that you should look for somebody who has the same texture hair as yours. That they have the same length as yours is not so important as texture, in my opinion, in finding somebody in a new town who can do a great cut. For example, the neighbor whose cut I liked had very short hair, while mine was shoulder length, but her texture was very similar.
I just re-read your original post - you can probably do better than a national chain. The stylist I found the way I`ve described charges $20 for a haircut in a town where the "best" salons charge about $34 and the national chains charge $8-10. So, in my experience you don`t have to go to the very most expensive salons to find a great stylist, but you can do better than national chains.
