I have hair loss from PCOS.  I was hoping to do extensions but have lost even more hair.  To top it all off, I just found out that I may have skin cancer on my scalp.  I would like to go ahead and get a wig ordered while I wiat for the biopsy results just in case.  Plus, I think I would like one because my hair is so thin and stringy right now anyway.  Is wearing a wig a good way to grow back my hair?  I want to grow my hair back until it is fuller and more healthy and then stop wearing it (which would probably be quite a while).

And most importantly....where would you recommend to order from?  I am an extreme perfectionist so if the base is at all obvious, it will drive me crazy and make me paranoid to wear it out.  Oh yeah..I'm very short too so people typically see the top of my head and not straight into my face.  I am willing to pay a higher price to have a better, more invisible wig.  I can't afford to pay $10,000 though. :P  I also have my 10-year high school reunion coming up this year so if I will be wearing it to that, I want it to look good and very, very natural.  I do'nt want it to look like I have a wig on at all.

I have very fine, blonde/light brown hair.  I want something that will match my natural hair texture as well.

Thanks so much for your help!!!

welcome to the board, i'm so sorry for all your going thru. .and to answer your question YES its a great way to regrow your natural hair.. you can get it in a color to match your own hair color...you don't have to pay a higher price just learn how to apply it and order it for a realistic look.. in the newbie thread are names of vendors that are located in china that you can purchase for a good price.. most american vendors buy from them and then are reseller's of lace wigs.. to make it look natural you need to learn the density in ordering your unit, like i usually order a light density for the hairline b/c its more natural looking, also with single knots..

Hey Mommy! Sorry to hear about your hair loss and possible skin cancer?!

I think you would do well trying a lace wig/unit; maybe even starting with a closure piece/topper or a lace frontal. I guess it depends. If you see some of the pics here, you will see that you can get them to look extremely natural!

Hope everything goes well for you. Keep us posted on what you plan to do; we are here for you!Tongue

I was readng how if your insurance covers CRANIAL HAIR PROSTHESIS" you can be reimbursed for your purchase if you have a sales receipt to submit with your claim..

If a person requires a "cranial hair prosthesis" while undergoing Alopecia or cancer-related therapy, they may be eligible for reimbursement under their health insurance plan?

If you need to wear a wig because of medical reasons like Alopecia and cancer-related therapy that the "wig" should be called a "cranial hair prosthesis" for insurance purposes?

If you file an insurance claim for reimbursement for a "wig" instead of a "cranial hair prosthesis" you will very likely be turned down?

Most insurance companies cover between 80 to 100% of a cranial prosthesis?

Insurance Companies are realizing your cranial hair prosthesis are more and more a necessity for those recovering from Alopecia and cancer treatments.

Follow some simple guidelines to assure coverage, when it is available through your insurance company.

Your physician should be able to supply all the details and make the referral for the purchase of your "hair prosthesis". Ask your physician to do that.

When receiving your hair prosthesis, have your stylist complete an invoice for a "cranial hair prosthesis" NOT a wig and use the following   guidelines for filing an insurance claim.

  • Check the benefits of your insurance. There should be a section under "covered expenses" relating to prostheses, prosthetic devices or medical durable equipment. Most companies don't spell out exclusions so pay attention to the actual coverage. this will help your case.
  • Make sure to complete the insurance form and have it signed by your physician.
  • Request that your physician write a "prescription" for a "full cranial prosthesis" (not a wig) and a letter explaining hair loss and its effects. That it isn't just for cosmetic reasons but for emotional well-being as well.
  • Keep copies of your sales or invoices for your cranial prosthesis. (Portions of unpaid items by insurance are tax deductible.)
  • Enclose a letter to the insurance company stating the necessity of a prosthesis.
  • Some optional suggestions are

    - include a letter from your employer,
    - take pictures of yourself without hair,
    - hand write a letter detailing the emotional effects that your condition has had on your life,
    - bring a copy of your prescription and paid bill tot he American Cancer Society for partial reimbursement.

  • If your insurance coverage is denied, you can appeal it:

            a. ask for review by a medical review board, include the original claim
            b. ask for a written reply as to why the claim was denied.
            c. send a letter tot he claims department supervisor.

These steps are for reference. Remember to follow the procedures outlined by your insurance company to receive the fullest benefits possible. Most companies cover between 80 to 100%. Individual insurance companies as well as the state insurance board (each state varies) may have other or additional steps to complete.

If you don't have insurance contact your state or county agencies. The county department of social services offers medical assistance in most states for individuals who meet certain income guidelines.

1. What is a Cranial Prosthesis

1. What is a Cranial Prosthesis

1. A Cranial Hair Prosthesis is medical insurance jargon for a hair system for those suffering from hair loss due to medical conditions. Prostheses contain a combination of fabrics and compounds that are used to re-create natural hair growth patterns and the look of the scalp. All materials in the prosthesis are designed to provide maximum comfort.

Cranial hair prosthesis are different from budget or department store wigs in quality. performance, and service. Prostheses are made of specialized material - sensitive to the needs of the individual. The fit is adjustable to each person's size and also custom cut and styled. A department store wig (budget wig) has a set style - what you see is what you get. Service plays an important role when selecting a hair prosthesis.

When looking for hair loss options, you need to decide what will best fit your needs - wigs, hats or turbans, integration hair pieces, hair replacements, or a custom wig.

A Medical Specialist can help you decide

As each company has the option to determine what it will or will not cover with respect to durable medical equipment. You will need to review each company's policy to know what it does cover. If you are purchasing this insurance as a private individual, you could ask for a rider to be put on the policy specifically covering cranial prosthesis; however, you may be required to wait a length of time as the need is due to a pre-existing condition. If you are choosing this insurance as a benefit from your employer, chances are it is not covered by either of the companies you have mentioned as Alopecia is considered an "orphan" disease due to the few people per total population afflicted. Those of us, like me and you, who are afflicted do not see the difference between an ocular prosthesis, which does not provide a biological function, and a cranial prosthesis, which also does not provide a biological function, although most insurance companies will cover glass eyes.

Take heart in knowing there are people who are putting pressure on insurance companies to cover the cost of a cranial prosthesis, and you can always write to your congressman, senator and state insurance commissioner about your needs.

Hi Mommy2aprincess, I remember you & your hair from the hair extensions forum!

I am so so sorry that your situation hasn't improved so far. Keep your hope and faith and hopefully things will be ok. When will you get your biopsy results?

I am a total newbie with lacewigs too, so I won't be able to help you much here, but I will recommend that you read as much as you can, starting with the newbie thread, and also old posts.
It seems like a lacewig would be a great option for you.

You all are awesome!  Thanks so much for the responses and help!  I appreciate it so much!  Frenchie1- I can't believe thatyou remember me from the extensions forum...it's been a while! :)

I still haven't gotten the biopsy results...within the next week for sure.  I am just hoping that they can tell what is going on..I'd almost rather get bad news than no news at all.

sexibeach- That would be awesome if insurance would pay for it.  It the biopsy comes back positive, I'm definitely going to look into this.  Thanks so much for the tips and terminology..that is so helpful! :)

I read through most of the newbie information thread..wow!!!  It is overwhelming, to say the least!

Where would you recommend to buy from if I don't want to have to alter it in any way when I get it and still have it look completely natural (like already have the knots bleached, etc.).  I have chemical allergies so I won't be able to do any modifications like that.   I don't mind paying extra for a custom unit.  I just want to order it from someone who has already done everyting to make it look as natural as possible for me..haha!  Maybe once things aren't so stressful, I'll learn more and be more willing to experiment. :)

I looked at the links within the newbie thread and also have been searching around the web.  Has anyone tried the Optimum Invisibly wigs?  I liked that they have European textured hair available.  The texture of my hair is super fine so that is appealing.  On the pictures, why is there a distinct color change on the scalp though?  That does not look natural to me!

Thanks so much for your help!!

Mommy2aprincess, I remember you sure. You seemed very kind and I remember the pics of your natural very thinned hair.

I hope you'll get your results fast and they'll be some good news for you.

I know the newbie thread is crazy overwhelming, took me a few days to 'absorb' it all lol!Reading a lot of old posts can help too!
Take care

Thanks!  I will look into getting insurance to cover it..that would be such a relief!

So...how long does it usually take to hear back from vendors when you e-mail them? I e-mailed a few at the end of last week and haven't heard back from a single one. :(  I'm worried that I'm not going to be able to get one in time if I want to do a custom.

Sexibeach- I couldn't get hte second link that you posted to work for some reason.  The first one looked great but it looks like they only do African American textured wigs?  Even the blonde says, "blonde african american wig."  I do'nt think that will match the texture of my hair.  I am *very* fair-skinned with light blue eyes and very fine hair (used to be blonde but is more of a light brown now).  What do you think would be my best bet???  I was reading another thread about the triple reverse knots and they sounded awesome.  Do you know anyone that I could order them from now (the link that I looked at said they weren't offering them until this summer)?

Thanks again for all of your help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So...everyone that has replied so far said that they do not offer a texture that will match my natural hair.  They said I could definitely get the right color, but it wouldn't match the texture. :(  Anyone know where I should look?  Also, I am still very interested in the triple reverse knots if anyone knows someone that offers those with european textured hair I would be forever grateful!
Thanks!!! :)

Hi Mommy. I just wanted to say that I'm not sure I believe that you need to get 'European textured hair' for it to look and feel like your hair. I think this may be something that you will need to play with and just try a vendor to see what you get. I have very fine-textured hair that was naturally curly but has straightened out considerably since I started bleaching it. I have fairly thick hair, but it's silky. The lace frontal I got from Holly (#613) is Indian Remy hair silky straight and is beautiful! It feels so close to my own hair. Every vendor is different though. Don't just blindly follow what people tell you; give it a try for yourself or you will end up spending lots of money for something that wasn't necessary. Hope you get some great hair!!!Smile
Love clip-ins and tape!
