QuoteReplyTopic: GOING "NAP"-TURAL!!! Posted: April 24 2008 at 7:16pm
Hello all,
Well Well, it's been some time since I have posted.
I am currently thinking about going natural. I have had weaves and braids for a long time, and I like them. But I have had this last weave in for 5 months and I have a lot of new growth. It is sooo soft and feels like a babies hair. SOOOO, I got to thinking: Maybe its time for a change! I feel my new growth and love it, and my relaxed hair is ok, but not as soft and so much more of a hassle because I have to straighten it a lot (It's the african in me, our hair is ultra wavy/curly, and never goes straight. At least in my Ibo family!).
I need some advice on what products to use to keep my new growth nice and moisturized, while transitioning. I really want a nice, big, Lenny Kravitz 'fro, so any advice or tips on how to maintain would be great!
Thanks yall!~~~~That totally just gave away the fact that I'm from TX

Hey Urhobo over here lol Congrats on your decision to go natural. I am 2 yrs into my transition and I can tell you the best way to know what products will work for you is through trial and error. There are 2 things you will want to do during this time and that is moisturize &do weekly light proteins and monthly heavy proteins. 1 product I wish I had at the beginning of my transition is Silicon Mix it does have mineral oil but I mix it with Miss keys 10 en (http://www.sickbay.biz) and it makes detangling soo much easier. I would also recomend trying the Carmel treatment this is a light/med protein treatment that leaves the hair soft and manageable. You'll also want to use a gentle shampoo and avoid sulfates unless your clarifying and in that case follow up with a moisturizing shampoo. There is great information on growafrohairlong.com, happycurls.com, and motowngirl.com. And you can also check out my fotki for tips and product reviews. HTH and Happy Transition! Soooo..........I'm guessing there aren't any other ppl, besides my Nigerian Sista over here, that have tips on going natural???
Maybe this is a sign that more of us need to try it! I mean, do what you want, keep up the damage of chemical relaxers and dealing with straightening the kink, but I KNOW there are more of you ladies out there who are a little fed up with the everyday grind (it really is like a job yall) of dealing with 'our' hair. It isn't made to be straight, so we are constantly manipulating it to achieve a look that aint natural.
I dunno....Maybe it's just late and I need to go to bed and not be on here tryna start something, LOL.
Get at me ladies! I need more tips and advice, or comments.

I thought it was about the pick up when alot of BHM members came over here but it is even more quiet than before! It reminds me of Black hair, Black beauty forum which was my first forum (Hairboutique was 2nd) and it is practically a ghosttown over there now. Hopefully you'll come back ever now and then to help us struggling naturals out!!!

lol the women ain't all went to the lacefront section.
This site is really becoming depressing and so I am going to move onto another one.
Sorry ya'll
I just say, use the products that work. Trial and error.
Most of the natural products do not work for me, except for olive oil in my conditioners.
Ive been natural since last summer, I couldnt go through the transition phase, i dont have that much patience. I got tired of wearing wigs and weaves, because honestly thats the first thing a lot of people (in my area at least) notice about you [ "is that a wig or a weave?"] I just grabbed my clippers and shaved it off... felt like a weight was lifted off my shoulders, well actually it was
but ive been letting it grow out since feb so i got about two inches of "fro going on
Ive went through many of product lines, and basically like sista cmesweet said, you'll have to go through trial and error.
Ive tried the jane carter solution line, my hair didnt like it, Ive tried carols daughter products, and Ive only come to like the Kissy stay put pomade & the lisas hair elixer( i cant like without the hair elixer!!) oh and i also like the black vanilla leave in conditioner..,Ive tried redken fresh curls...its ok
right now im playing around with paul mitchell products and my hair loves it ...I really like the supercharge deep conditioner treatment...I'll be Try trying out Aveda products soon...also i take fish oil twice daily
If you can , buy sample sizes of products you would like to purchase.
Once you do the big chop, you wont be able to keep your hands out of your hair, lol , i know i cant
I wish you the best!

I actually don't want to do the bigchop. I think I will just cut off my straight ends gradually until I have enough fro to rock out! LOL
I have had my weave in since January (I know that's a long time, but my hair stylist is just good like that!) and I left my edges and some hair out on top. Now I have so much new growth, about 3-4 inches, that my weave is sitting up higher where my edges were left out. I plan on taking it out in the next two weeks or so and I want to begin my new journey.
It's weird, but I think my hair actually likes mineral oil. Most of the ladies say not to use it but when I use it my hair just drinks it up and I think it helps. I use Sunsilk leave in products and the day after my hair is so soft and feels like baby hair. I ususally don't have to put in anything else until about 3 days later.
Maybe its just me. But I don't like those waxy 'aim to black ppl' products like african pride, doo gro, or blue magic. Those things can be used in a bee hive! LOL

I agree! I went natural for about two years. My hair was 20 inches so I had to find solutions. I flat-ironed then tried the twist curls then tried pony tails and braids.
I finally just shaved my head and WOW what a feeling!!! My husband kept it buz-cut for me. I started growing it out again back in December and I find I can't keep my hands out of my hair. It really feels good. I wonder if it is because it is ALL new growth since I shaved my head or is it because there is no more relaxed ends. Anyway, it feels really good.
I'm experimenting with different products and have found a regimen that works real well for me. I'm wearing lace wigs now, so I really don't want my hair to grow too fast; but it's growing fast anyway. I wanted to shave my head again, but my son wants me to grow it out for now; so I'm growing it for him.
I really haven't found a style that works for my natural hair without flat-ironing, or twisting/curling, so it's just easier for me to apply the lace wigs whenever I want.

Well I plan on just growing out my natural hair by wearing braids or weaves, then whe it is at a good length, I will wear it out. I will probably maintain it by braiding every now and again though just cause I like to change it up!
