A friend of mine needs to know if gel existed in the
ninetenn twenties. If not; could someone please tell me what brands of wax, pomeade and tonic were available for men at that time?

Defintely did not have gel or wax. They used a substance called Lustre, which would be something like Brillcreem. That sort of plastered down hair was REALLY popular then. Before that, there was something else that made a mess on the furniture and led to those little linen protectors near the head :)

The stuff was called "brilliantine". Men wore their hair parted in or near the center and slicked back with brilliantine, an oily, perfumed hairdressing that added shine and kept hair in place. This look was popularized starting in the early `20s by screen idols, such as Rudolph Valentino.
