i posted before about coloring my hair  and need some more advice.
1st a little history. i had done my own hair for many years. i always tried to get as close to my natural color (dark brown, and my skin tone is cool) as possible. about a year ago i used a color specifically for brunettes.
it turned black and using a light color didnt help. i went to a salon and they put in highlights (using bleach and toner) which looked great. i had this done 3 times over a period of 6 months.
now i am not working and cannot afford to go to a salon. i am 48 so i have grey which i hate! i thought i could wait but getting tired of pulling out the greys.
i know i need to use gold as opposed to ash to prevent green. how light of a color should i go? medium golden brown or light golden brown? is there a chance my hair will turn black again? after initially using golden brown will i be able to switch to ash the next time i color?
also, doing research some say the highlighted portions will remain lighter and some say they will grab color more. if i color all over 1 color and it looks all one color will it be safe to rehighlight it again?
i cant afford to buy alot of different colors to do strand tests so i would like to just buy color once. i really would appreciate any help.

Hi Thirteen,
The first thing is how light are the highlights in your hair? If they are a blonde, they may grab the color but usually they will be lighter because the pigment has been pulled from the hair and there is none left for the new color to deposit into. make sure that you stay within the light to medium category of colors, anything darker may result in black. You can either use a red or auburn tone, or a golden tone to prevent green hues. You will be able to highlight your hair again but keep in mind that it may damage your hair by coloring and then re-highlighting. You may also want to look into an at home frosting kit for highlighting the top. Hope this helps!yes

hi krystle,
thanks so much. if you could answer one more question, if you were doing your hair with my circomestances would you choose light golden brown or medium golden brown?  regarding the higlights, yes they are more on the blonde side.  thanks for the frost tip, if it looks ok after i color i will forego rehighlighting or just wait awhile.

I would start with a light golden brown, that way if it is not what you were looking for you can always go over over it with a medium. Happy Hair Days!Tongue
