touching up highlites

I`ve been thinking of trying one of the brush on highlight kits and was wondering if I do go through with it, in 4-6 months how would I touch up the highlights? I only want to do a few small blonde streaks in my light brown in the front and top layer of my hair. Would I have to pick out each strand that was colored? Or is there another way it`s supposed to be touched up?
