QuoteReplyTopic: Perms? Posted: August 01 2002 at 5:58pm
For most of my life, I`ve had pretty straight hair. Now, my hair is naturally wavy, and it gets more so as it gets longer. In the past few months alone, I`ve gone from having little curls in my hairline hair to having wave everywhere.
but, sometimes it irritates me, because one of my side always flips out and isn`t near as wavy as the rest of my hair.
i have hair that`s about an inch or two past my shoulders, but with the wave, it`s shoulder length.
i don`t mind the wave, and i really like it, actually, but that one section on the side ******es me off. and... sometimes i wish that the wave were more even.
if i got a perm using bigger rollers... like around 1/2-3/4 inch diameter, might that make things more even, or would a perm not even take well with that? are perms reserved for tight curls only?
You mayt need to talk to your stylist about your hair. Perms can be tight, loose curls, spiraled curls are for body and wave. You may want to try a body wave perm. I hoped I helped.

I agree with RachelA. I have used body perms in the past to even out curls and it worked very well. If you decide to try it, consult your stylist - these are harsh chemicals and can damage your hair. Use the mildest perm solution and largest rods you can that will achieve the look you want. You should also be prepared to condition regularly to prevent your hair from drying out.
If you try it, let us know it worked for you. Good luck! ;)
Alright... my hair is in good condition, and it recovers from such evils rather quickly. i`ve had tight spiral perms before... but my hair is way too short for that right now.
okay... i`ll probably go talk to someone on saturday. i`ll keep you all updated.
thanks

Glad to hear your hair is in such good condition. That is important (not to mention attractive).
A body wave is good for keeping your hair style looking good all day. By using larger rollers, the result is more lift and you can create anything from a soft curl, to simply adding a little needed texture to fine limp hair. A perm on the other hand creates a more noticeable curl. A perm, done on smaller rollers, produces a tighter curl pattern. Both the body wave and perm use very similar chemicals but the size of the rods determines the difference between a "body wave" or "perm".
Hope that explains the difference. Happy waving! ;)

Your hair type can be permed and the results can be natural, even curls. The size of the curls will depend on the size rods used. Caution is urged because African American hair is generally fragile and chemicals can cause damage. I have read that over 80% of the Black population has dry hair so conditioning before any chemical service is recommended. IF you decide to go with a perm, I recommend you use a product developed for your hair type. I have seen great damage done by women using a "kiddie" perm thinking it was mild and would not damage their hair. Not true. Discuss your options with a stylist you trust. Hope this helps. ;)
