QuoteReplyTopic: Becoming licensed? Where to start? ETC. Posted: June 15 2009 at 10:49am
Hi All..
I used to post on here awhile back but after growing out my own hair, I've kinda skipped out on extensions! I still love the way look and everything about them but having naturally long hair is just easier for me, less money, less up-keep etc. But don't get me wrong, I still have a passion for extensions!
I'd really love to become licensed but I have no idea where to start. I don't have the time to spend 1000hrs in cosmo school especially when they don't even touch on the subject! I'm in NYC and I've been told I need a Natural Hairstyling license but.. I can't find any place that offers it.
I'd love to start doing quality extensions out of my home. I'd love to open up a salon one day but obviously that's a little out far fetched for right now. I've always had a passion for hair and since I already have some knowledge, I figured it would be something I'd really enjoy.
Where would I start though? Do I offer all methods? Do I offer all hair? Any tips or advice from you ladies who already do this would be great!
Through a quick google, I found info about the Natural Hairstyling license here http://www.dos.state.ny.us/lcns/professions/appearance/hair/hairmain.htm

Thanks! I'm confused though. It seems like you still have to complete 300 hours. Maybe I'll just send an email and see where it is that I can complete those 300 hours. Who knows how long I'll have to wait for a response.. blah!

From what I hear, the problem with aquiring the natural sylists license is that most people cant find any place that offer the required classes, or there are very few places that offer the classes.
Disasterbarbie - hi! What is your name btw? I am interested myself in this license. I'll do some research to. I'm in NJ near NYC. I would love to get this license myself. If you find anything out, let me know. I went to school for Esthetics, skin care and wish I would have gone for cosmetology!

Hey Karissa!
My name is Melissa :). I just called the NYSDOE and there are two schools in our area! I'm in Brooklyn so I'm not too far from NYC either.
Both schools are located in NYC. One is called USA Beauty School International which is in China Town. The website doesn't mention it so I sent them an email. Hopefully, they still offer it. The other class is in a building called Queens Community Center. It's also in the city but I couldn't find too much info. I have the address and phone number written down at home so I'll call them later on or tomorrow.
Btw is 7/17 your birthday? Bc my birthday is 7/18 lol!

Exactly! Luckily for me, I found two schools in my area. I'll contact them and see what happens.
