QuoteReplyTopic: Help! Serious terror against growing hair! Posted: July 07 2003 at 6:03am
Help needed! Iīm growing my hair back long from short style (I always had it 4-5 inches below my waist untill some strange whim with scissors...). I just felt like something missed, I miss me. Lukily all my friends have long hair and weīre sharing tips and exitement of every new, healthy inch we get.
But the tragedy is that every time my hair seem to have grown a bit I get bitter comments on how much more easier, practical and more suitable(!!!) short hair is on women in their 30īs (HELLO! Didnīt the space-ship go back to 18th century!!!)
Luckily I know better and Iīm determined to get past this in between- phase. And my other long haired friends tell me theyīve met with this same kind of hostility, canīt we all be at ease with ourselves and with others.
Iīm still considering myself as short-haired but luckily since Iīve been able to reach out to those velvet-scrunchies and just roll my hair aroundīem life has gotten a lot easier. But Iīm telling you...itīs a hard job but Iīve decieded to breeth deep- for a few years. ;-)
By the way, sorry for the crazy name, just every name I tried to logg-in with were used so I ended up with this one... Anyways, I think this board is just great. Iīve been reading for a while and I realized that if Iīm gonna hang with this mission for so many years Iīm gonna need all the support available.
I wish you all a good day! Blessings!

LOL! I just had that problem the other day signing up somewhere else. I wasn't happy with what I ended up with.
Welcome! You're gonna fit right in, I can tell.
You are lucky to have long hair friends in your life to help you. Most of us here only have each other in cyberspace.
And I thought it was funny what you said about thinking of yourself as still having short hair. My hair is bra strap length and awhile ago at work I said to someone that I was trying to grow it out long and they said "It already is long!" I always thought of waist length hair as long. But then the other day I had to call someone at work for help with a project and halfway through our conversation she says "Traci... you're that gal with long blond hair, right? I've seen you around." That made me feel proud.
It sounds like your hair is the perfect length for one of my favorite hair dos that my hair is now too long to do. You get one of those shark jaw clips... put your hair in a low ponytail, twist it, fold it up so your ends are sticking up in the air, clip the folded pony to your head, tousel the ends so they look all messy. Very cute! Very easy!
"Hair is a part of you. It is not a part of me, because I am a frog." - Kermit the Frog on Sesame Street1b/N/ii ~ ??"/27"/32"
lol. I feel the same a while back when I was 11 I choped my hair short and kept it like that for YEARS and now that I'm growing it I get the urge to cut it and I did once and took like 3 inches off and hated it. Its bra strap length and I still consider it short. I was talking to this guy and he was like "Long black hair is AWESOME!" and I was all "My hairs not long." I don't think of it as long until is goes past your boobs.

p-b, you crack me up. Yes, that space ship ought to be oughta here already! You and your friends just ignore that old, out-dated dogma about who supposedly can't have long hair. Great that you have the determination to get back that length. I'm sure you will!
Oh, and to you, SuperGrover and Dana, long is simply a relative term. What's long to others doesn't have to be "long" to you (and it isn't). So you just go right ahead and grow your hair as long as you each want.
Grover, if it weren't for fixing my hair with those little jaw clips as you just described, I would have never made it to this length.
Today is a hair milestone for me; I put my hair up into a french braid, and it's actually staying together! Just eighteen months out from growing out 3 or 4 inch hair! Dave, you're so right; long is a relative term. Today, I feel so hair wealthy!
Welcome, p.b.! Poo* on those who think short hair makes you look younger! (So why do they tell kids with long hair to cut it so they look older? Hm-m-m, that's conflicting advice!) Decide for yourself what suits you.
Hello everybody! Thank you for wellcoming me here, I was thrilled to discuss on a board for the first time...especially when the subject is something I feel passionate about. CONGRATS 3KATZ!!! A french braid is something I can still remember having...but Iīm a looong looong way from it. One day...Iīm telling you guys. One day... Thank you Grower for the shark jaw- idea. Actually Iīve been using it quite a lot. It is very feminine and I love it. Since Iīve adieud all my styling equipment Iīve relied on jaws, pins, scrunchies and such stuff. I also try to vary the point where I put my hair up, since I try to avoid any breakage or un-necessary pull to my roots. Iīve also put some fresh flovers and decorative hairpins, clips and so on my hair when itīs up to spice up my growing time. Iīm not happy with the shortness of my hair so I donīt wear it open. In a couple of inches, sure. Not just now. And to comment on short hair and its relativeness; a friend of mine had a waist- lenght hair and cut it a couple of inches to get the damaged part of hair off (She had high-lights and perm-NONīT DO THAT STUFF!!!)She was happy to get her hair back to good condition but now she is growing her hair back to waist lenght. She is still talking of having short hair... Dina, how long is your hair? Having a long black hair is my dream.
I have a dream.
One product I have to introduce to you all. Itīs a leave-in conditioner from Body- Shop:PALMSHINE. Amazing stuff! Smells good and you can just literally pour it into your hair and it doesnīt get heavy or greasy. Iīve put all my long- haired gals on this stuff. And when you comb your hair after youīve put it on it closes nicely the cuticles on your hair and prolonges the dreaded visitations to salon...
Hi PB! Sorry I've been a little late in extending a warm welcome but the other gals have gone a great job as always. Your screename cracks me up! Hope you enjoy your chats here :-)

I don't listen to people who say people past a certain age shouldn't have long hair. I'm going to have long hair for my entire life (barring catastrophe.) I think long hair is a great look for a mature woman.
Greetings, PB. Welcome to the boards. Do not, repeat, do NOT listen to those old goats out there who say, "Cut your hair after 30." like parrots with a broken record. I will be 43 the end of this month and my hair is about four inches longer now than it is in my sig pic. I do not listen and have had MANY people tell me that. I say No thank you, I don't care to conform to your societal values. Keep it long, girl!!!
ut the tragedy is that every time my hair seem to have grown a bit I get bitter comments on how much more easier, practical and more suitable(!!!) short hair is on women in their 30īs
Do you honestly? First of all, I'm one who advocates that a lot of people today spend far, far too much time making unsolicited comments on the appearance of others.
Secondly, if someone said that he preferred your hair short simply because he likes it like that, it's a comment of mere preference.
However....it seems to be that the above comment that you stated smacks of insecurity and jealousy from the person who uttered it. (Any person with half a brain will read that I did not say that every positive comment about short hair spells out insecurity and jealousy of others.) But, when someone gives an unsolicited opinion that is not only meant to persuade but is also slightly degrading to your current style ("more suitable" hair for a woman in her 30s), it certainly gives the appearance that someone is perhaps not so comfortable with her own choice and is trying to make herself feel better at your expense.
However, if men are giving these comments, my observations are irrelevant and voided!
Out of curiosity, who are making these kinds of comments more often -- men or women?
The only thing that I personally don't care to see on the decreipt, elderly women over 30...(just teasing, I'm one, too) is huge hair bows. To me, they simply look a bit silly and more like a piece of costume jewelry one might wear at Halloween. I never have and never would tell that to someone wearing one, but I simply don't care for that look at all. But elegant barrettes and headbands and hairsticks and other hair jewelry are extremely chic and I think add an extra element of femininity to a woman's long, luscious locks!
I have to admit that it hasn't been that long since I decided that I would rather possess style than be stylish. Stylish women all line up at the salon and boutiques for identical factory haircuts and clothing. A woman with style carves her own path of fashion and beauty.
Hallelujah Jennifer! I couldnīt agree with you more! Iīm sure you have a RAVISSANT style of your own and did I mention how much I agree with you? Actually itīs either younger girls or older women that comment stiffly...since (living in Finland) long hair is not a common style so hair growth gets notised very easily. And yes I do see that itīs jealousy speaking and no I couldnīt care less about it...honestly-I do īcause it gets me so irritated after hearing it so often! What comes to my male-freinds some of them have said (blushing) "I see you are growing your hair back long...nice" so I do believe they are happy. But none of this really matters that much, the reason my hair will get long is īcause I want it that way. Itīs my home. How ever others want their hair to be, I salute them! But after living many years in mediterranean countries...Iīve never seen this kind of picking on person than in this country! I should calm down now and thank you all for your wonderful replies, I cherish them and in the words of Cher; LOVE AND UNDERSTANDING!

Incredible. Why on earth would your hair be of such importance to others?
The next time someone makes some kind of ridiculous remark about why you should wear short hair, just run your fingers through your gorgeous tresses, smile seductively, and say, "Yes, a lot of people would love to have my hair....!" Then, walk away while flipping your long locks over your shoulder.....
I will...as soon as these babies grow a little bit more Itīs just a fact that in this very northern country having a long hair is very easily considered a strong threat to other women...I see this from my friends very easily since we go to dancing classes EVERY time they open their bun/schrunchie whatsoever to re-arrange their hair or when leaving, these women just kill them with their looks. To them, itīs a threat and one "of them" approached me when I had cut my hair and told me she felt she didnīt feel so intimitated (!!!!) at my presense any more, that I was more "normal" now. I had no idea that she felt intimitated in the first place. Now when she commented that "in her opinion" I should cut my hair back... I had to ask her blankly who the #+§% did she think she was to give ME any advises on MY hair. She never commented again.

One more "comeback" for when you cannot afford to insult the other person at all (for instance, perhaps your boss' wife) is simply to say, "I'll certainly give that some thought," and smile. No one can argue with that!
When I cut my hair, I think the worst question I had was, "Do you like it?" What a horrible question! If I answered yes, then I was lying. If I answered no, then the person would feel it his moral obligation to talk me into liking it. And, since I did not bring up the subject, I felt it incredibly rude that someone would make such a big deal out of my appearance. Even though it was positive, it was negative to me since I didn't care for the change.
We constantly criticize Hollywood as being the land of the "plastic and artificially beautiful" people who care more about the outside than the inside, but it seems to me that the rest of society is slowly following suit.
