During the first half of the year, U.S. department store sales of nail color were up 70 percent, according to NPD Group findings.  Nail Polish is definitely a great accessory to have for a very reasonable price when money is tight.

Even better, nail polish will last a very long time.  Experts estimate that average bottle of nail polish will last for 30-50 applications depending on the number of coats used, the length of the nails painted as well as whether both the fingers and toes are painted.

Beauty start-up Lacquerous is proposing a new business model where customers, for $18 a month, will receive a choice of three different nail color, which at the end of the month can be returned and exchanged for three new colors. 

The catch?  It's likely the three bottles of nail polish the customers receive will be used.  Much like handbag, shoe and clothing rental models, Lacquerous believes customers will be delighted to receive three new nail polish colors every month, even if they're not brand spanking new.

Lacquerous believes that because so many consumers take so long using up each nail polish bottle, by the time they do hit the bottom of the little bottles, the hues have fallen out of fashion. 

But is that really true?  Does nail color hues every really go out of favor?  And will consumers really be willing to risk using used nail lacquers?

Lacquerous claims to have bottles in approximately 70 shades available prestige brands such as Butter, Chanel, Dior, MAC and Tom Ford which might retail for somewhere between $14-30 when purchased retail.

“They’re pretty expensive as far as nail polishes go, and women don’t use everything that’s in a bottle,” says Liza Kindred, a New York fashion startup consultant who signed on to help launch the company after being approached by Co-Founder Ashlene Nand at an event.

Along with offering women a way to spend less for ongoing access to a wider variety of nail colors, Lacquerous has the advantage of dealing in a product that consumers are already trained to share. 

Lacquerous is counting on an instant acceptance of its start-up model by pointing out that nail enamel is one beauty product which many women already willingly share every time they head to a nail salon.

“Nail lacquer is one of the only things that can be shared,” says Kindred. “It’s similar to going to a salon, where you pull the bottle of polish off the wall and share it and put it back up.”

While some met Lacquerous’s launch last week with questions about hygiene, the company points to research which suggests it’s impossible for bacteria to grow in the chemical cooktail comprising most polishes.

Along with that, Kindred says the company is taking additional steps that most salons don’t:

“We inspect [bottles] to make sure they’re uncontaminated, which is actually more than they do in the salon.”

With a familiar business model that’s already been proven and the nail color’s current trendiness, the company has a wait list in the thousands after launching last week.
