I use a slightly lighter recipe when I use the vinegar. I use white vinegar (I think either kind is fine), 1 Tablespoon in 1 cup of water. I just pour that over my head, I don't leave it on for any length of time. If I don't use vinegar, the clarifying shampoo brand I use is Avalon Lemon Verbena. It does dry my hair out more than the other flavors of Avalon, so I'm pretty sure it works. I only clarify once every 2 weeks.

Sorry, I personally don't know what it does to different hair types, or dyed or treated hair. I haven't tried it.

Yummmm.. I get significantly softer hair after clarifying with a vinegar rinse (1/2 cup apple cider vinegar + 16 oz water). Oftentimes I can literally FEEL the silicone buildup. If I don't clarify for a month, the silicone coating flakes off my hair!!

It's basically to remove product build-up. Store brand clarifying shampoos tend to be somewhat drying, so if you have dry or processed hair you may want to limit their use, &/or go for a good salon brand.

My hair is on the dry side, but I use my husband's Suave or VO5 shampoo about once a week to clarify. And these are not "clarifying" shampoos per se, sometimes they are even labeled "moisturizing" but really they're not and they do the job of clarifying because they contain strong detergents.

I use an extra good conditioner afterwards since these shampoos are so drying.

I do love the "clean" feeling I get when I clarify.

I've heard quite a bit about this. Please tell me what exactly washing hair with a clarifying shampoo and/or rinse is supposed to accomplish? Does anyone know if it's supposed to be safe for all types of hair? And what store-bought and homemade formulas would you recommend?

Thank you all for being so helpful
