QuoteReplyTopic: help! severe split ends Posted: February 19 2005 at 11:37am
Does anyone have any awnsers? My hair has become severely damaged i presume because i have not had it cut for years. It is about 16 inches long but its thin and scragily and nearly every single hair is split and broken in several places nearly all the way to the top. I have tried cutting the hairs induviduly but its a losing battle. I know the only way to get rid of them is cut them off but this would almost mean shaving my head. I desperatly dont want to have short hair but if i must is there any way of hiding it e.g. extensions or somthing, bearing in mind id need to trim my hair every 4 weeks so it would grow back healthy. Of coarse theres always the wig option but i dont think i could afford a proper good one. If anyone knows and could help or has any suggesstions it would be much appreitiated, espeicially as it is my 21st birthday soon and it would be nice to have my hair problem sorted by then.

If it were me I would get the most split parts trimmed off, then try to take good care of the rest of it from there, and trim the individual splits off the rest. Maybe you don't have to go so short. I wouldn't necessarily go for years without a trim, because splits are bound to happen, but you certainly don't have to get your hair trimmed every 4 weeks to keep it nice. If you trimmed only 1/4 of an inch off every 2 months, that would be plenty once you get it back to a healthy state. (and you'd still see some growth...hair only grows an average of 1/2 inch a month).

Make sure the scissors you are using are good scissors meant for hair and only used on hair.
I bought some recently myself from Sally Beauty Supply.
The package says Shear Technologies but it was on the same shelf as these http://www.sallybeauty.com/shop/1920/255800 which say Belson Expertiz Shears The item number is the same and so is the company, Belson so they must have just changed the name.
Of the ones I could hold up to the light these looked like the least amount of light / gap between them. Their shears range from under $10 to around $45 unless you go into the glass case and get the really expensive ones.
Edited to add: Those are $25 regular and $22 with the card
