I have had thin fine hair all of my life. Lucky for me I have had my Cosmetology lic. since I was 17 years old, as I can do my own hair extensions, which saves me bunches of money!! I modeled for Texas Monthly Magazine in Dec. of 1992, (page 125, the one with the waist length blonde straight hair) the "Big-Hair" issue, made a couple of commercials and had a ball with a few personal appearances, and Oprah Winfrey even showed my picture on her show when she was in Amarillo on trial. So, because of "hair" I have had so much fun. Now that I`m in my 40`s some people squawk at long hair. This has hurt my feelings and I recently took out my extensions. Now I feel ugly with my thin fine shoulder length hair. I want to put my extensions back in. What do y`all think? Is there really an AGE that we should do away with our long locks? It`s easy to say "I`m gonna do what I want to do and the heck with what others think", but we all really do care. Thanks for listening!! Fallen Angel :)
Have a great day!! Angel :)

pre-"anti-long hair squawk"... you liked and enjoyed the extensions.
post-"anti-long hair squawk" ... you removed the extensions and felt "ugly."
Um, the choice seems clear. Go with what you like. :-)
You ask if there is an age at which "we should do away with our long locks?" The answer, I feel, is this (worded as a question): "at what age should we do what we want with our hair and ignore those who tell us that we ought to cut it off?"
Hope this helps give you some perspective. :-)

I think you should present yourself in a way you really like. Reading your comment I think you should put your extensions back in. Live is hard enough, why not trying to get a little bit luck? For this it is never too late. People always have their own difficulties, and if they try to disturb your joy of life it`s their problem. Women with long hair have their admirers in society, independent from age. Some weeks ago I have seen a women about 50 with a long ponytail and she looked so nice. Please don`t try to be pleasant to everyone, but be lovely to yourself.

Yes people words can really hurt us more than we will admit. The other day a extremely close relative came up to me and said" that my husband hated my long hair"and prefer it when it was short. Firstly my late husband always wanted me to have hair like crystal gayle so that relative never knew this. SEcondly what a stupid thing to say to a widow when the only thinkI have left is the memories of my marriage and how he felt etc. That close relative is my mother. I told her that it was the meanest thing I ever heard and that ask her why she does this. Of course she thought it wasn`t mean. Meanwhile I cried for a whole week knowing that he wanted me to have long hair and that it wasn`t true and I felt betrade by her being my mother and I wish that he was alive to set her straight but I have to strong. She doesn`t know this. I love my mother but. she really doesn`t get it.
So Fallen Angel I know how it feels !!! I am 40 years old and lately my hair is shorter because of a clipper poor experience stylist that clip away my waist length to the middle of the back lenght. I think the bottom line is that some people seriouslly don`t understand that long hair is part of our personality and in your case you use an extension to express yourself which looks wonderful in many ways. Many times I thought of doing the same when I wanted to quickly have long hair. Some people think that some long hair people don`t want to spend the money at the stylist and that is the reason why they have long hair and of course that is true on some cases but what some people don`t realize that in some rare cases some people really do care about things like that. I think in general most people really don`t mean it to be so nosy about our business. one would think at the age of 40 we are intelligent enough to know what is best for us right? I am so sorry for your pain. Lots of hugs.

Dianne, I am sorry to hear of your mother`s remarks. And you are right that at our age, we ARE intelligent enough to make our own choices about our hair. Hope this next bit gives you a smile: :D
Excerpt from “Forty Reasons why Life is More Fun After the Big 4-0” - Liz Curtis Higgs
.....my hairdresser is fighting me every inch of the way. Every six weeks her scissors are poised over my head, the gleaming shears reflecting the predatory look in her eyes. She wants that hair. Can almost feel it snip-snipping beneath her lightning-fast shears, falling to the floor in pitiful wisps. She murmurs something about it “being for my own good”... Maybe she grew up with the same messages that P. from SC did, telling her “I should cut my hair because my mother’s generation said you look cheap over 40 with long hair. My hair is long and blonde and I’m 42. I love it this way but constantly fight the ‘little voice’.” TELL THE LITTLE VOICE TO TAKE A HIKE. After 40, you can wear your hair very short or very long, very gray or any color in the rainbow, without worrying about looking too young or too cheap. Cheap? On the contrary, if you can drop $60 to chase that gray away, you’re old enough to choose your own hair color and whip out a Platinum AmEx to pay for it.
