Depends on how dark it is, and how red you want it. According to the box swatches, my hair is dark-brown, but it takes darker shades of red very well without bleaching (even the really temporary cherry-red like you get at the Hot Topic), but I have a friend whose hair is just a little darker than mine, and no shade of red she's put yet, not even permanent, will show up as more than a tint.
If you want an auburn color, then you might not need to. But if it is really dark brown then you might. But take my tip and stay away from red. I'm a red head (hence the name), kinda a dingy copper. Unless you get a fire red, then it doesn't look good (no offence to other red heads, it just looks bad on me) but I might be wrong!
