Actually, there is a "hair friendly" contraceptive pill that women take for hair loss called Diane (only sold in European countries, however I believe). Even if they don't need the pill for contraceptive reasons, they are taking it because it is actually causing a reverse effect on their hair loss.

Conversely, when you stop taking many contraceptive formulations, you may experience a great increase in hair loss (this is really common). The hormonal changes that occur when you're pregnant (and that are present while taking contraceptives) actually prolong the Anagen phase (hair growth phase), and when you take those hormones away, you're thrown into the Catagen phase (shedding). That's why I think people will take a BCP for hair loss, but they also realize that this is not a permanent solution to the problem, especially when you go into menopause. I would say to seek out all natural courses (I've never been on a bcp because of the side effects).

Rosebud,

The pill does not promote hair growth. The pill mimics hormone levels of pregnancy in order to prevent one from becoming pregnant Mainly progesterone. The extra progesterone in the body increases overall circulation, which then increases circulation to the head, thus extending the lifetime of your existing hair. It does not increase the rate of growth. A follicle can only work so fast. That is genetically programmed.

Hi Helen,

I definitely think that tangles can contribute to hair loss. When necessary, I work out tangles with my fingers. Occasionally I'll miss one when I'm combing and yank out a few strands at the roots. Yeoch!

Funny that nobody ever has recommended contraceptive pills for people who have thin hair and would like to get it thicker. At least I´ve never heard such advice.

Well, for men you can´t recommend them .

Thank you so much Hippy and Viktoria .

I thougt that brushing thing because my hair gets fast very tangled if I don´t brush it, and I thought that maybe the tangles could cause hair loosing. But I think that stopping pills is the reason of my hair falling.

I think Hippy is right, the pill usually makes the body feel like it´s already pregnant, which is why most women on the pill have larger apetites and so on. And a lot of women notice better hair during pregnancy, but not directly after.

I don´t know about brushing - bloodflow is good, for sure, but I massage my scalp instead of pulling repeatedly at my hair, and comb my tresses carefully. I can´t ever believe not using a brush would cause fallout!

Hope it gets back to normal soon!

Stopping the pill causes the same hormonal process that often occurs after pregnancy and causes hair loss. It will most likely stop, but consult your doctor if it seems to be extreme.

In the beginning of June I started a stressful job and stopped eating contraceptive pills. Unfortunately I started loosing huge amounts of hair... first I thought it was because of working hard (and sleeping too little). But then my work was over and still I´m loosing my hair... then I thougt if it could be caused by stopping pills. Is that possible?

Third reason could be that I didn´t really brush my hair... can that cause hair loosing? I mean, if the scalp would need it because it makes the blood flow up there...
