Lately I have been having a very bad habit of snapping & breaking off the splitting/weakening spots at the ends of my hair, and splitting the hairs, too. Is this doing more harm than good? I mean, its getting rid of the gross looking ends but does this cause future damage or worsen the problem? I keep my hair trimmed but these splitting hairs won't quit appearing. Thanks for any info you can give me.

It splits the hair in already weakened places, so the ends are more likely to split again. Keeping your hair trimmed and otherwise treating it gently and with care are the best defenses; still, just about everyone ends up with a few split ends. No matter how careful I am, I always have a few.The best thing to do is to cut split or broken hair a little above the visible damage using a very, very sharp scissors. I bought a scissors intended for professional haircutting, and I use only that to trim them one by one for a few minutes every now and then. My husband helps frequently. It may sound silly, and you may feel as though it will make you end up with hair all different lengths, but believe me it works. If you don't cut them off carefully and quickly, they will split more, and the difference in length will be greater due to the increased breakage, as well as looking worse.Lauralswanson@sunflower.bio.indiana.edu
Not silly at ALL! I've been trimming my split ends individually for several years now... any time I get a chance. It does workI agree that snapping of splits is a very bad idea. You're stretching your hair. When you split the split, it's splitting the hair in half further than it was damaged in the first place.Try the scissors... it sounds like you may be a little obsessive-compulsive like me, and the snipping w/scissors can satisfy that tendency too.Da Augs
