One year ago I had my hair permed, then had lemon highlights added to blend in the gray. Now I have colored my hair back to brown because after touchup highlights it all started looking grey and I have very little grey naturally. I keep my hair trimmed so I have no split ends. I never blow dry, yet I have very dry hair and my hair is not shiny. Can someone help with products I can use. So far ones that I have tried either do nothing or make my hair look greasy instead of healthy. Note: I have very long hair (to mid-back) and am growing my bangs out to match. Should I cut it all off, layer it or just condition it?

Hi,Sorry to hear of your hair problems. I would not recommend that you cut it or do anything else to it until you first get it back to a more equal balance which can result from some good conditioning.Cher, who visits Hair Talk, has had wonderful luck with Aveda's Curessence conditioner. She applies it to her hair and then puts on a shower cap and wraps that in a hot towel and lets the Curessence soak into her hair and it works like a charm. If you have any questions, I am sure Cher would be glad to help.I highlight my hair which tends to be dry anyway. So I have found several things that work well to add moisture and condition and shine.I use a very gentle moisturing shampoo. Aveda's Shampure is wonderful and lately I have found ARTec's Smoothing shampoo which is formulated specifically for dry, color treated hair. I have also found ARTec KIWI shampoo to be a great conditioning shampoo. There are others on the market, but I know for sure these work.I also alternate between Aveda's Deep Conditioner and Aveda's Curessence. I also use Aveda's Beautifying Oil which has a high concentration of Jojoba oil.For an instant conditioning, I use extra virgin olive oil with some rosemary oil added to it (for dryness) and I heat it, apply it to the parts of the hair that need it and then slap on a shower cap and the hot towel. I use a gentle moisturing shampoo to get rid of the olive oil and then a rinse out conditioner like Deep Conditioner.Any use of chemicals like perms or color will potentially damage the hair shaft and will remove the natural oils. You can put them back with lots of conditioning. When my hair is dry from summer heat or other factors I will condition every other day. Sometimes I do it every day. Just don't put the conditioner on your bangs if they get oily.Layering will only compound your problems. In my opinion. If you want instant access to the Aveda or ARTec products at the best possible prices, chec out the WWW Beauty Store.I have been ordering from them lately and am very impressed. I save a lot of money at their Internet store compared to what I have been paying at retails store.Very safe too. Absolutely totally secure.Good luck.Karen> One year ago I had my hair permed, then had> lemon highlights added to blend in the gray. Hello.. I agree with Karen's regime..She's the pro here. The Curessence is a great deep conditioner. Just like she said, after washing my hair, I slather on the Curessence and let it stay on for as long as possible. Try it for one hour first..then move up accordingly to what you hair needs. My hair was soaking up the conditioning time, and just recently got to a point where I can spread out the sessions of conditioning. I also use Shampure which is a high quality shampoo from Aveda.. I have just started alternating Aveda with Nature's Gate Herbal Shampoo and the Conditioner. Dawn..a lady here on the board with knee length hair, uses this brand. She mentioned recently she is using the jojoba line of Nature's Gate with alot of success. Natures Gate is a great product for the money. Aveda is expensive but if you are having severe dryness and want to keep your length of hair.. please give it a try. It sure got my hair back to a healthy state. It's just alittle too heavy duty for me now.. When I do my twice a month deep conditioning..it will be with Curessence. I also use the Beautifying oil about twice a month as a pre-conditioning treatment before washing my hair. The oil is expensive as most of Aveda's products are, but it goes a long way. I am still not halfway through the bottle and I have thick hair past my shoulders. Please feel free to email me if you want to chat about any of this.. Cher> Hi,> Sorry to hear of your hair problems. It sounds like your hair must naturally be pretty resilient to take all that abuse and still be in semi-decent shape.> Can someone help with products I can use.> So far ones that I have tried either do nothing> or make my hair look greasy instead of healthy.> Note: I have very long hair (to mid-back) and> am growing my bangs out to match. Should I cut> it all off, layer it or just condition it?I'd agree with Karen and Cher - Curessence is the way to go for really intensive conditioning. I don't use it all the time, because it's expensive (even more than most Aveda products) and it's too heavy every day, but lately the weather here has been doing bad things to my hair, and I'm using it every 2-3 days.I also use jojoba oil on my hair and scalp before washing. It leaves my hair very soft and shiny. Sometimes, when I have time, I leave it on for an hour or so to really deep-condition.I haven't tried their Deep Penetrating Revitalizer, but I just got some to test, since I'm almost out of Curessence and it was out of stock. I'll probably post my thoughts on it after I've used it a few times.Just to give you a basis for how to take my thoughts on this, my hair is long - to my waist - straight, fine, and thick. It is sort of light brown naturally, but I use color conditioners to bring out some more red in it (there's some to begin with). I'm growing out my bangs. I wouldn't recommend layering. I had layers once or twice when I was younger, and hated them. They take forever to grow out, and they require a lot of attention to make them look right. In my opinion, they are not worth it! They also require more frequent trips to the salon, and you can't trim them at home in an emergency. (Actually, I haven't been to a salon except to buy shampoo and conditioner in five years! I get all my trims done at home by my husband, or, when I visit, by my mother.)Good luck! I know how annoying dry hair can be - mine has always been on the dry side - but try a good conditioner, and don't expect instant results. It will take time.Laura Jane lswanson@sunflower.bio.indiana.edu
