Hey Margaret, don't freak, your hair can be saved. You obviously have lots of red in your hair naturally so it is going to be difficult but not impossible to get to ash blonde. First, I highly recommend that you invest in a trip to a good salon and talk to a colorist. Don't ruin your hair further by trying to do it yourself at this point. I know I say this a lot, but believe me, I have been there, and I messed around until my hair was fried and green. At that point even a salon could not help me. It took AGES for it to grow out. If I just would have gone to a colorist FIRST I could have saved myself much grief, money and time. I think it is possible to color your hair at home but only if it is a fairly simple process. If you are trying to change something or repair, or go more than 1 or 2 shades from your natural color, it needs to be done in a salon. That is why I don't recommend that brunettes go blonde unless they are aware of how much it will cost for the upkeep. Your colorist will probably use a "drabber" when she colors your hair to keep down the brassy red tones and acquire the shade you want. Plus, she can weave in some highlights so your hair has natural tones and not an all one color obvious dye job. Good luck! Let us know how it works out!

You could try color stripping then dying it the desired color. Red is really hard to get rid of. It doesn't go to blonde until after a few dyings. Loreal Les Blondissimes may help...the only real solution is to get it bleached. Hope this helps...I have a similar sitution.Jennifer> Help! The color of my hair is awful!! Help! The color of my hair is awful!! I am a natural light brown, or "dirty blonde". I have had my hair highlighted in the past, and now I am letting it go more natural. But now my color is a brassy, orange/red color that I just hate! I would like to just be a neutral-looking ashy dark blonde, or even light brown, but no red!! I have had the temporary shampoos, color treatments,(both semi-permanent and permanent, but they always fade out pretty quick and go back to being brassy!!) I am at the point of chopping it all off (right now it is to my shoulders). The top layer isn't so bad; it's the underneath, which shows when I wear my hair up! Any suggestions for getting rid of the brassy color without doing too much damage?
