I am really sick of my hair.I want to change it but my parents won't let me.Anyways, here's what I wanted to do, I wanted to cut itabout shoulder length and I wanted to highlight thin strips of it blonde. I am sure about the dying part but I'm not so sure about the cutting part. I want my hair straight, right now its like wavy straight,it is semi-thick and it is a heavy texture, it is about to my kidneysright now, my friend used to have really wavy hair, and when she cut hers, it turned more straight, if I cut my hair, will it be straight and shoulderlength or wavy and frizzy and shoulder length??My hair is like a dark brown, almost black color.

Hi,I am in the process of writing a brand new article for A Brides Friend site that features my hair tips and articles. I am writing how to make changes to your hair, without risking permanent damage or irreversible actions like cutting your hair and then regretting it.Here is a brief synopsis of my article. You can get a different look for your hair and banish boredom with these simple steps:1. Add/subtract/change or highlight bangs. If you have bangs, change the look of the bangs. Have the bangs thinned out or cut in multiple lengths so that the middle part is shorter and highlights your eyes but the sides are longer and can be worn down hugging the face or gelled back. Add tiny highlights of fat chunks of color. Use temporary hair mascara to test the look before you make it permanent. If you don't have bangs. Add them. If you have them...grow them out. This provides an instant new look for your hair without any major cutting or drastic changes.2. Change the part of your hair. Add multiple parts, add messy parts, add thinner parts, fatter parts or even change the direction of the part. Wear part of your hair up, part down, wear part pulled back and part down loose. Many ways to change the look with this approach.3. Add temporary color in the form of wash out color, hair mascara streaks or temporary chunks.4. Add hair jewelry. How about multiple hair ties or multiple scrunchies or jeweled butterfly pins or even multiple barrettes? You can do all sorts of different looks. When I get bored with my hair I will do all of the above. I will also wear it braided and up for several days, or parted in the middle instead of the side. I will wear it heavily gelled at the sides or scrunched up to accent the waves.Play with your hair, be creative and avoid major changes that you might regret until you have really had lots of time to comptemplate if you are really into a major change or just temporarily bored.Hope this helps.KarenBy the way, I am writing this with one side of my hair gelled back and pinned and one side hanging in waves. I like the look. Kind of multiple personality. :-)> I am really sick of my hair.> I want to change it but my parents won't let me.> Anyways, here's what I wanted to do, I wanted to cut> it> about shoulder length and I wanted to highlight thin> strips of it blonde. I know as my hair gets longer it gets less frizzy and the waves even out a lot.If your not sure about changing the length then DON'T DO IT. It takes a loooooong time to grow the length back. Go get some highlights and see if you like your hair better that way. They can make a BIG difference in the look of your hair. You can always cut it sometime later when you're more sure that you want it shorter.-jennifer j

Two quick things...1) Cutting wavy hair will reduce the weight that is pulling it as straight as it is and will make it more wavy. Just the way it is.2) If you read the message closely, she isn't questioning whether she wants to cut it to lose length, but if it will fix her wave/curl. I only point this out since it seems to send the board into a frenzy when any one posts about even the very possibility of a doubt in cutting their long hair.A view from the other side,JF
3 pm is simultaneously too late and too early to start anything.

Hi JerkyFlea,"just me" is questioning whether cutting (presently) "wavy straight" hair willmake it straight. You and Jennifer J have both stated your belief that cuttingsuch hair shorter is likely to enhance the wave rather than make it straighter, and I would tend to believe also that that outcome is more likely.Perhaps that reason alone is a suggestion to "just me" to avoid going shortergiven that straight(er) hair is what is sought.> it seems to send the board into a frenzy when any one posts about even the> very possibility of a doubt in cutting their long hair.I think it is well-intentioned advice to be cautious, perhaps very cautious.I have noticed more than a few posts on this board from people who have cuttheir long hair short, and soon thereafter want very much for their hair tobe long again (and more rapidly than is humanly possible). It seems to methen that advice given to "be cautious" may well be warranted.Dave

Hey. I know how you feel. But the shorter you hair is, the curlier it will be. I didn't know I had curly hair until I cut it from just below my waist to just above my shoulders. The length had just weighed it down all those years (about 12 years worth of growth). I had to beg my mom to let me cut it before I went to college, but I convinced her that it would be easier to take care of, and that worked. With shorter hair, you spend less on shampoo. =) Try that argument, but if you want it short, do it gradually, with about 6 weeks in between each cut. You will be shocked at how different you look with shorter hair. Probably much older and that's probably what your parents are afraid of.
