Is it bad for hair to stay wet for a long time? Sometimes I put my hair up while it's wet and it stays wet until I take it down. Can this damage my hair? I'm as gentle with it as I can be. I never brush it when it's wet, etc. But can letting it stay wet hurt it? Thank you in advance - Johannah

Well, this is kind of gross, but this happened to a girl who went to my high school: She had _extremely_ thick hair (only a couple inches past her shoulders in length, though), washed her hair one night, pulled it back tightly, and when she got up the next moring it was moldy! I myself have never had this problem, but my hair is not thick at all. Just something to think about...

Oh, that is so GROSS!!! (I'm allergic to mold, too, so I feel somewhat strongly on this one.)I have moderately thick hair, and I've never had that happen. If I braid it or put it up in a bun, it can take over 24 hours to dry completely, depending on humidity and so on. I suspect that this person's hair was exposed to spores right after washing, to get that sort of rapid growth. I can't imagine it would be common at all.Ew, yuck!Laura Janelswanson@sunflower.bio.indiana.edu(who has just reassessed her standards as far as bad days...)

Wow, I had never even thought of that. I was just worried that it might weaken the strands or something. When I take my hair down and it's still wet it's still all clean and smells like my conditioner. Since I have only heard about hair molding this once, and because my hair is only moderatly thick and not left up THAT long, I'm not going to worry about the fungus issue too much. But if anyone knows if it can cause any other damage, please let me know. THank you. Bye.

Laura Jane (who has just reassessed her standards as far as bad days...)I know your response to mouldy hair is genuine, but you express yourself in such a heartfelt way, I had to laugh.I've been damp-haired for 36 hours in northeastern Nebr. humidity and have never moulded (yet), but I wondered, too.RunningWild
