Bun???

Hi,I know this may be a really basic question but what is the best way to put your hair in a bun?I used to twist my hair up and around, then secure the bun with a rubber band(as if I was doing a ponytail) I found this very damaging to my ends even though the rubber band was braided.Then I tried use a hair comb to hold it at my ends but the longer my hair has grown the less this seems to work and this also left my ends kinda hanging out of my bun - didn't look very neat - not to mention that the teeth of the comb sticking my head all day gave me headaches. I do not beleive style should have to be painful.I also tried to use bobbypins but I don't think that I am doing it properly.I don't know if there is some special hair accessory that can help me with this.Any help would be greatly appreciated.Thanks!!!!
