I have chin to shoulder length, brown, straight hair. I wear it curled under and behind my ears. My hair is soft, thin, and shiny (no complaints there.) I wear a lot of head-bands for a change, (which isn't saying much!) I need some help. I like the length. However, wearing it down and tucked behind my ears everyday gets pretty boring. I cut bangs not too long ago and it seemed to help, but only for a while. I need some tips on styling or accessories I can use to get out of this rut I'm in. Please Help!
Hi Jean!As a hairdresser I focus on face shape first and thenthe hair texture/type second.Since you did not mention your exact face shape, I'm including somehairstyle guidelines and a face shape self test that you may find useful! :)Your stylist can help you determine which of these six common face shapesmatch your features. Or, slick back your hair, and use a bar of soap totrace your face on the bathroom mirror. Either way, remember that thefollowing style hints are suggestions foreach face shape - not rules!Oval: Slightly narrower at the jawline than at the temples, with a gently rounded hairline. Try a variety of styles. Most any style looksgreat on you! Avoid covering up your "perfect" features with heavy bangs,or too much forward directed hair.Rectangular: Long and slender, about the same width at foreheadand just below cheekbones. May have a very narrow chin or a very highforehead. Try short to medium lengths, fullness at the sides of your face(not on top), or soft wispy bangs. Avoid too much length - your face willlook even longer! Also avoid height or teased styles that lengthen your face, and center parts. Try side parts or pulling hair straight back.Round: Full-looking face with a round chin and hairline.Widest point is at the cheeks and ears. Try short styles with a swept-backdirection; or longer-than-chin-length hair. Also try an off-center part, orstyles with fullness and height at the crown. Avoid chin length hair with arounded line that mirrors face's circular shape. Also avoid center parts,short-short crops, and fullness at the side or ears.Square: A strong, square jawline and usually an equally squarehairline. Try short-to-medium length hair; especially with wave or roundnessaround face. Also try wispy bangs, off-center arts, and height at the crown.Avoid long straight styles that accentuate square jawline. Also avoidstraight bangs or center parts.Heart-Shaped: Face is wide at the temples and hairline, narrowing to a small delicate chin. Try chin-length or longer styles, side parts, or swept-forward layers around the upper face. Also try gentlywispy bangs. Avoid short, full styles that emphasize upper face. Also avoidheight at the crown, and severe slicked-back looks.Triangular: Reverse of the heart-shape - a dominant jawlinewith narrowing at the cheekbone and temples. Try shorter hair that balancesprominent jawline, and styles that are full at the temples, and taper atthe jaw. Avoid long, full styles that draw attention to jawline. Also avoidcenter parts and too much height at the crown. As far as, hair accessories go here is a fast way to utilize velcro rollers effectively:First, Blow dry the hair as you wish, maybe after spritzing itwith some volume spray. Then once the hair is dry, carve outwafts of hair that are about the size of the roller at the roots.Using the velcro roller as a brush, smooth the under andouter portions of the waft of hair. When bushing the hair, brush it in to a 45 degree angle in relationship to the head(90 degrees is straight out from the head so half lower thanthat). Then take some mousse or setting spray and and apply itto the full length of the waft of hair. Then roll the rollersfrom the ends to the root in that same 45 degree angle. Now take a Blowdryer set on high heat, blowing into the insideof the rollers from an open end so that it heats the hair frominside out. Heating all of the rollers should only take a totalof 2 minutes at the most, then let the hair cool down for 1 minutefor the style to lock in. When releasing the rollers from thehair DO NOT SLIDE THEM OUT like conventional rollers - insteadroll them out exactly as you rolled them in, this is the trick toprevent tangling. When placing the rollers in start from the topof the head and work down to the hairline, when taking them outstart at the hairline and work upward. Once the rollers areremoved, use your fingers to break up the curls, then use a hairpick or large vent brush to direct the hair as you desire. Once youlike the look mist the hair with Sebastian Shaper Plus and enjoy! In your service,Mickhael> I have chin to shoulder length, brown, straight hair.> I wear it curled under and behind my ears. Hi Jean.Have you tried the bobby pins with decorations on them that seem so popular this year? I've seen them worn in all sorts of ways and combinations. You can use just a couple to hold back the hair that you would normally tuck behind your ears, or a whole row of them cris-crossing like a headband. They come in all sorts of colors and designs. Some are very cute and trendy while others are dressier or more professional.Another option might be the claw style clamps. They can be used to hold the longer hair in back and maybe some of the sides. Depending on how long the hair towards the front is, it may not stay back. But that's okay. Just curl it slightly and let it hang down. I've seen this on lots of women at the office where I work.Hope this helps a little.Teresa
