What can I do to stop the clumps of hair that I lose? I have thin hair to begin with and I am fairly young and not on any medications. I've heard of thickening shampoose, but what do they really do? If one of the professionals could give me a brief idea of why some people's hair strands are thin while others are thick, I'd appreciate it.Great site!

Hi, Bobbi!Welcome to Hair Boutique and Hair Talk. I agree with you that the site is excellent and that you're likely to hang around for a good while:)The short answer to your question is that the texture and growth rate of your hair is determined largely by genetics. I read somewhere that as much as 70-75% of the population has thinning or fine hair. Products such as shampoos which seem to thicken the hair are temporary at best. Some can make your hair extremely "gummy" and hard to comb through. It really depends on the formula sometimes.Even someone with great genetics can lose hair due to improper nutrition or rough styling (e.g., excessive use of heating appliances like blowdryers, curling irons, etc.) Your "clumps of hair" could be from either. Your hair can also shed from things like stress or an excess of certain nutrients like Vitamin A.I'm sure that someone here could also suggest some good hair products for thinning hair.Bye for now,Jade21What can I do to stop the clumps of hair that I lose?> I have thin hair to begin with and I am fairly young> and not on any medications. Dear Bobbi,As Jade21 says, genetics play a major factor. Is there a history of hair loss, especially early hair loss, in your family? If so, on which side?Other factors include be trauma (if you underwent a traumatizing incident between 2 and 5 months ago, or so, your body wouldn't be likely to react ith hair loss until now) and stress--stress is generally thought to be a major cause of hair loss. Then again, many drugs (and some supplements) can have hair loss as a side effect; ask your pharmacist, nutritionist, or health-food-store owner about any of the above that you're taking. Also, many people label SLS (sodium laurel/laureth sulfate), an industrial cleanser found in many shampoos, as a culprit. That's a start for you. :)Jeff MachAurora Guy> What can I do to stop the clumps of hair that I lose?> I have thin hair to begin with and I am fairly young> and not on any medications.
