Hi,I've heard that 100 strokes a day can weaken your hair.I've also heard that 100 strokes a day is good for your hair.I also get the impression that most women long ago had long hair.. and they brushed 100 strokes a day.If this were true then wouldn't the 100 strokes a day be good for your hair? I tend to think that anyone who has really long hair must be doing something right or they wouldn't be able to grow their hair so long.I'm trying to grow my hair long... between mid-back and waist length. (after the perm has been cut out) Again, I normally have fine, oily hair. Right now the longest length is bra length. I have two lengths... the back length and the side length. The sides go down to just above my shoulders. (before the perm last spring I had one length at the back and long layers on the sides.. I'm growing out the layers)Oh yeah, and my bangs have grown out to an inch past my chin.So I was wondering what all of your opinions and experiences were regarding 100 strokes a day?(I've read the long hair club's brushing guide)

Hi!Long hair care guru Dr. George Michael recommends brushing long hair 50 strokes a day in the morning to promote circulation. The brushing moves the scalp's sebum down the hair shaft to the ends, where it's needed for lubrication and protection. As long as you use a good brush (he recommends boar bristles with a wooden base), you shouldn't do any damage.Hope that helps!Sincerely,Jennifer
I am not convinced it is just the 100 strokes a day that allowed women in "olden days" to grow their hair longer - for starters, the culture then was for girls and women never to cut their hair, to cut your hair was shameful, that's why most of them had super long hair. Also, they usually wore it up in a bun or some other protective hair style; they didn't spend time in the sun's damaging rays without a bonnet; they didn't wash their hair as often as we do or use heat styling; or use alcohol-based styling products; or color or perm their hair....Which is a long way of saying that I, personally, just don't believe in the "100 strokes" rule. If your hair is curly or even very wavy, brushing can actually damage your hair; since you have fine hair, I would also be very careful with excess brushing so you don't break the hair. Brushing can also stimulate the oil glands and your hair is already oily; you might get even oilier. And, the distribution of sebum is beside the point, since it just gets washed away in your next shampooing, and most of us in the industrialized world shampoo pretty often. I'm a wavy head, and I personally brush as little as possible, only when absolutely necessary, only after detangling first with a wide-toothed pick (never remove snarls with a brush!), and only as much as it takes to align the strands of hair. So, you can see that there are conflicting theories on the matter of hair brushing. What it boils down to is that every head of hair is different, and you have to decide what works best for your hair. Why not ask your stylist for advice? Good luck growing your hair!> Hi,> I've heard that 100 strokes a day can weaken your> hair.> I've also heard that 100 strokes a day is good for> your hair.> I also get the impression that most women long ago had> long hair.. and they brushed 100 strokes a day.> If this were true then wouldn't the 100 strokes a day> be good for your hair?
