I'm sorry you had such a bad experience!

I had a somewhat similar experience awhile back ago...when I came back to the salon, I had short hair that was cut to one length to about above my ear! I can tell what you mean by 'muffin'...
Have you tried using some different products to see how your hair? If you haven't already, consider testing out different things (seeing how it looks scrunched with gel, twisted up with bobby pins, headbands, whatever) before you run out and try something else...you might just need to style it and work with it yourself to see if that helps at all. I tried that with my own hair after that specific cut, and it didn't look that bad after I styled it nicely.

If you still think it looks bad, maybe consider looking for a different stylist (maybe a good one that a friend can recommend) and going to them to see if they can help you fix it into a haircut that will look nice and help you on your way to growing it out. It takes some definite patience, for sure...but of course, hair always grows back.

Extensions can be something to think about, but consider your options.

If it looks muffin-like, it's probably just too one-length. I'd think more layers would help soften the look a bit.
