Hello!

Alright. Quick question. For the past few months I have been dying my hair black (natural is auburn). Would it be possible to take my dark hair and make it a light blonde without damaging it? I plan on going to a pro, so that would probably minimilize the damage I'd think. Would they have to strip it, bleach it, or both?

Thank yew!

Oh yeah. And also, I heard that dawn dishwashing soap helps get the black dye out. Or something. Would that help in any way if bleaching/stripping is the way I go?

Unfortunately, you can't go from black to blonde without incurring some damage or even breakage. It's a tough one. Most stylists will try to discourage you from going blonde. The black dye will have to be removed and then your hair will need to be bleached. It may take more than one bleach application to get your hair light enough to tone to a blonde shade. You may have some trouble finding a stylist willing to take on the challenge.

If you want to use Dawn in the meantime, it will fade your colour slightly, but make sure you condition really well afterwards. Dawn strips your hair of moisture. ("Dawn gets grease out of your way") I've heard that virgin olive oil can fade your colour too (and it will actually soften your hair).

One more thing: What brand of dye have you been using on your hair? I know that Feria, for instance, poses a special challenge when it comes to removal because it's a direct dye -- color fixers don't remove it. In a case like that, your hair would have to be bleached numerous times. It may not be possible to bleach to a light enough level for blonde. Your stylist may only be able to get you to the orange level and then your hair could be toned a shade of brown.

I'm not a pro, so I suggest you find a stylist you trust and discuss your options with him/her.

Good luck. I hope you're able to get the colour you want.

Unfortunetly...I have been using Feria. The "Starry Night" shade... v.v If I wanted to just go back to my original auburn colour if blonde is too risky, they would still be able to remove it right?

If this helps at all, here is a pic of my current hair: http://octoberseve.250free.com/Black.jpg and with Photoshop editing, here is the blonde shade I was thinking, and my natural auburn colour (with a few highlights to 'spice' it up a bit =) I have also since gotten bangs, so I just edited them in as well) http://octoberseve.250free.com/Ashley2.jpg

I colord my hair a very dark shade of brown, and now I want to highlight it a very light blonde. I decided to lighten up a little before I get it highlighted because i want my base color to be a lighter brown.

So you can do what I did, in the meantime, to lighten up as much as possible at home before going to the salon. Try 40 volume developer with an ash hi-lift blonde. Your hair won't come out blonde, but the ash in the color will tone down any brassiness you might encounter while the 40 developer is lightening it up. So in other words, if you used the 40 dev. with bleach it would come out orange, but the ash color would make it a light brown. Or in your case, a medium brown. Leave it in like 20 minutes. 40 is strong so you don't need to leave it in any longer than that. Plus its just to get out the black cast in your hair. Not go totally blonde yet. It may actually take you back to that auburn shade you were talking about.

I like the blonde on you. A really rich brown would look good on you as well.

Thank you all for your ideas and help (:
If blonde is my way, how much damage would be done to my hair? Would it feel coarse like hay once the process is complete?

It's hard to predict how much damage will be done. Everyone's hair is different. Some parts of my hair have been bleached 5 times (and dyed a few times). My hair still feels really healthy.

If you decide to go with Amy's method, make sure you do a test strand first to be sure you get the colour you're aiming for.

As for damage to your hair from bleaching: If you want to be on the safe side, do a test strand. Snip off a 1/4" wide piece of your hair, apply bleach to it. Leave the bleach on until it gets to your desired lightness. Rinse off the bleach and then let the strand sit for a few days. Check it for breakage in 3 days. If it doesn't break, you should be okay with bleaching all of your hair.

A good stylist will also take the time to discuss the process with you and inform you of what type of damage may be incurred.

I hope you get the blonde shade you want. Good luck.

o_o Wow. I researched this 'Magma' by Wella and it sounds too good to be true! I will ask stylists around the area if they use it.
And in the meantime I might as well be lightening up my colour. Which is better to use? Dawn soap or virgin olive oil? How long will I need to keep each in for and how many times a week?

I see you have long hair, you should be aware that the amount of dyeing it's going to require is going to damage your hair a whole lot. I went (years ago) from medium brown to white blonde and my hair was fried. I used the 40 volume developer and a hi lift dye with a green base (to counter the orange that would come out, as amymusic said), and had to dye it over 20 times, 45 minutes each time, to get it white.

I'm all for people doing whatever they want to do to their hair, but I can't leave without saying you're beautiful with black hair, and it suits your complexion very well....and going from black to blonde can be a long and drying road!

The last time I got it streaked however my hair come out with yellow, orange look which had never happened before and I had went to the same place.. Black hair is hard to do anything with maybe try streaking first to get use to the blonde look..

Oh my gosh! Can I just say that you look gorgeous with black hair? Please do not put your hair through the stress of bleaching it blonde. Your overall style is really stunning!

If you're itching for change, why not consult a talented colorist who could put some highlights in? Not blonde highlights but maybe something a few shades lighter with a hint of red to it. That would look awesome!

Just my opinion though. I'd hate to see you wreck that beautiful hair just to be blonde.

There's also a new one by Farouk systems called CHI Infra Hi-lift Blondes, which can be on/off the scalp.

Yeah, I used a "temporary" black dye a few years back that refused to come out of my hair. I wanted to go blonde and was highly discouraged from doing so by multiple colorists (fear that my hair would 'melt'). I subsequently got it highlighted/lifted professionally multiple times (the  idea was that I'd highlight it up to the blonde) but never got to the blonde I wanted (very similar to the one in your picture). I also spent a WHOLE lotta $$$ and went to two different colorists so I'm not sure it was altogether possible to go that route anyways. Not something I'd recommend. if you can live with a nice highlighted auburn for now and maybe try the blonde once your hair has gotten rid of the black-you should do so. As for feria-I colored my hair with it about 4 months ago and two passes of colorfix still won't get it all out. Good thing I've found this site since and know what not to do again.
