Hey AMM,

A few weeks ago when we talked about synth you pointed out that it would be possible to just double over the synth hair at the tip instead of cutting it.

Just wondering if you tried this and how it went.

I really appreciate your updates--haven't ordered my European Virgin Body yet, and now I'm leaning more towards synth.

Thanks again!

I had a couple people ask what I meant by the doubled over strand. Here's what I was referring to:

If synth is super long, why make tips? Simply take a long strand, double it over (you can make one side longer than the other so you have a layered look)

Pass the looped top through the shrinkie

Now slide it up toward the end

Heat seal the shrinkie at the top making sure no hair is sticking out the top of it

The strand has two distinct tails and the looped part is secured under the shrinkie

I personally have not tried this. Yet. The shrinkie is shrunk really tight around the end. I can yank on it and it's not budging. This would eliminate any need to take bulk hair and tip hundreds of individual strands. I would think shedding is reduced to zero. Another thing -- if you have thinner hair and only have room for so many strands in your head, this doubles your volumne.

Thoughts?

Hey Amm, is that done on your head or do you use another shrinkie to apply it?

Either/Or. User preference I would think. For a DIY, pretipping with the shrinkie would be easier than looping and threading at the same time. And then apply another shrinkie over the top and thread your hair through.

I don't think it would feel too bulky with two because if you're making generous tips anyway that have glue over the top that hardens, it wouldn't feel any different.

Cost effective? Oh yeah. Considering shrinkies are about 6 cents each, figure a head of 100 strands would cost around $12 to do a complete install using two shrinkies.

No glue. No shedding. No wasted bulk hair.

Fantastic, I've also tried out pre-tipping hair with shrinkies and then applying with shrinkies but it gets costly for me as I have to ship in my shrinkies from America xx

Wow. That looks like a great idea. You'd save so much time. And if you wanted, you could use that for pretipping, then install with extendtubes or braids, if you wanted. There are many possibilities, really. Me likes!!! :)

Thanks for the info AMM--sounds like a winner!

And wouldn't shrinkie tips be so much more suitable for instant gratification than waiting 24 hours for glue tips to dry?

This rocks! Thanks!

Wow. I like that. AND if my hubby just does it on my head, with just that one shrinkie...kick ass....sounds awesome. Hope you get a chance to try it. My hair wont be in for a while, but we will def try it this way on a few and see if noone gets to it by then. I was NOT looking forward to tipping the hair.

I just don't get how it isn't slipping out. do the shrinkies literally melt and grab everything in them, so you don't worry about the hair shedding out slowly? wouldn't think it has a tight grab on it all. Only needs to really grab the outside hairs as an extension, but would not think would work as well in this way. Know what i mean?

tipping seems like a pain in the ass, aside from the simple fact that it is great to do while installation, if it works, seems like a great idea for tipping easily and without mess.

edit...I dont get how this would work...kalika said she experimented with shrinkies without tipping and they shredded like mad (IIRC) what makes this different??

Amm is folding her hair over and then tipping it with a shrinkie chick, therefore there's no way it can shed x

Yeah, I know that. I must be missing something, because there, to me, doesn't seem to be a diff between doubled over hair that is tipped and a batch of hair that is simply tippied, know what I mean? as a matter of fact, to my untrained mind, it would seem to be EASIER for the hair that is doubled to slip out of there.

I think I know what you're saying, SAS: If the glue layer inside the shrnkie isn't penetrating all the way through the strand, then would it hold the hair as securely as the actual pretipping glue?

My thinking is that because the shrinkie actually shrinks in size, the loop will stay securely where is is because it would be too big to work it's way back out of the shrinkie.

Just let me know if I'm off here. :)

If people are having problems getting their shrinkie applied correctly they will have a huge mess with shedding. So unless someone is experienced with shrinkies and have perfected their technique Id say glue/tipping would be the best suggestion.

Too much hair in the loop would be a shedding disaster. Chances are the shrinkie would not adhere to the entire loop of hair and the bottom portion would slip out.

The tip I did is about the diameter of a #2 pencil and the hair is not budging one iota.

Shrinkie technique could in fact play a big part in the success. As we've learned in other threads; placement, heat, rolling, etc. are the keys to a good install.

Hold on...I'm going to take a photo of something and post it in another thread.

Amm,

Where do you get Shrinkies for 6 cents each?

I've only found them at Doctored Locks and they come out to 15 cents each. (Jar of 450 for $29.95)

Then again I didn't use a calculator, just fingers and toes.

Hey Kat, I know what your problem is- did you ever have to have a finger or toe amputated? That could be screwing up your calculations. :)

This method, btw, is the standard for using bulk synth with microrings. It's in Doc's ring tutorial if anyone wants to see it in more detail.
