I don't think they were extensions. Consider:

March - JAG raps. Catherine has short hair.
May 14 - Long hair at "Bruce" premiere.
May 30 - Short hair at book signing.
June 5 - Long hair at "Stuff" party.
June 17 - Short hair at Hulk premiere.

I get the feeling that she bought a nice wig and uses it as a fashion accessory.
