I assume you aren't talking about shaving the sides to form one. In the punk days, they were formed with egg whites and super glue but that takes real style commitment. Now you can use gel - lots of it. Since it dries rather quickly you will have to work fast. Smear the gel into your hair and start working it upwards. If you want spikes begin forming them early becase of the quick drying time.

I just did my friend''''s hair (length ends at lower back) and we used egg whites, aqua net hairspray and gel, she laid her head on the floor and I blowdried it while pressing it to the floor. I work great.
