QuoteReplyTopic: softening brass w/ semi-perm? Posted: March 31 2005 at 4:04pm
ok first of all, i wouldn't even CONSIDER store-
bought stuff if i could afford the salon right now, but
hey desperate times.......boohoo. so i'd really
appreciate some advice!
i had my hair hacked off & coloured a few months
ago at a salon (well, coloured way too dark, stripped,
then re-coloured to a light/mid-brown). my mid/dark-
brown roots have grown out about 2 or 3 inches, but
the rest of my head is beginning to get really brassy
as the colour fades & i need to soften the hue/tone
down the orange WITHOUT going an ounce darker.
i'd prefer to stick with a semi-permanent for now &
would like to know if it's possible to get rid of the
brass - & be assured that the overall haircolour won't
go aaany darker - w/ a dark ash blonde or light-light
ash brown? basically i just want to tone down the
brass but stay at the exact same shade & figure
since the semi-perms only go darker, i might be safe
with a really light shade in ash?
ok, i think i've made myself clear 10 times over, *lol*
thanks!

Get thee to Sallys (or whatever your local beauty supply may be) and
look for an ash semi-permanent color (probably a blue-violet base) that
is the same level color as what your hair is. Then do a strand
test to be sure.
I like Clairol Colorgloss myself, but be aware that it sometimes comes
out darker than advertised (maybe color 8A would be good).
Another great Clairol product is Complements, use the demi permanent in an Ash tone and you'll need to mix it with the Color Prompter in equal parts, apply it and let it process for 15 minutes then rinse, shampoo & condition. Have the person at Sally's help you decide the level for you.
thanks, you guys.....much appreciated. i DID buy l'oreal castings in
both ash brown (light) and ash blonde, but i was too chicken to do
anything, so i returned them. i may just wait til the start of my new
contract, then when the $$$ starts rolling in, will head for the salon.
but i'll go to the beauty supply store tomorrow to get some info on
the stuff you guys suggested ....
thanks again.

Thanks Smurfette, for asking exactly the question I wanted
answered! Next I will check out your thread, Politix of Hair.
I can't believe I finally Googled to see where the nearest Sallys is
....I'd thought it was a 40 minute bus ride away? It's three blox from
my work! Yay! I will try the Clairols you all suggested.
It IS frustrating that the base color is not listed on box colors, if
that's all you can get.
I've used Koolaid and blue cabbage and blueberries and cheap
eyeshadow when in a toner pinch. Too bad they don't stain hair as
well as dental veneers! I can't believe that people in salons always
suggest blue shampoos or Manic Panic when I need something that
gives more bang for the buck. Is asking for "toner" not what I should
do?
