Any suggestions or advice?  About 1 1/2 weeks ago, I had my hair dyed to a dark brown (looks black, my natural color) at a salon that uses 'natural' ingredients, to cover some grown out highlights, some of which were blondish in color.  Over the years, I have highlighted my hair and twice before I have colored my hair back to my base color with no issues.  For two days following the dye job, the lowest back of my head was horribly tender and painful but I assumed it was from all the pulling and combing done during the color application.  The stylist put in a copper color first and followed it with the dark brown color.  Once washed out, we found that the color did not cover all the highlights as there were areas and noticeable strands that were not dark brown SO they did a re-application which seemed to work.  I believe for the next following days, I felt some itching but figured it would go away and I had started some salon shampoo and conditioner as they said it was better for my hair given OTC products have a lot of filler and alchohol.  Each time I shampoo, some color comes out (it was permanent color that was put in and the 2 times I've done this at other places before, no color washed out) so 5 days later I switched to another salon shampoo and color that touted it sealed the cuticle to avoid color wash out.  It didn't work and the itching got more noticeable as the week went on and then bad itching episodes and burning started (probably most notable 6-7 days after the process).  For the last few days I get bad itching and surging itching/burning episodes (last a few seconds at a time with general itching most time). I've been miserable and scared my hair will start to fall out.  Is it the dye that I'm probably having an allergic reaction to?  I didn' t notice any itching/burning during the process.  Or could it be the shampoo's I used?  I had switched back to the first shampoo for a day after swithing for 4 days but the level of itching/burning continued so I called my doctor who recommended to use hydrocortisone cream on the scalp (medicine is being skipped for now given I've been trying to get pregnant) and baby shampoo.  It's been only a day since following these directions but the hydrocortisone cream does not seem to be helping any (applied a few times a day) and I'll probably need to follow up with the docs once the weekend is over.  I'm wondering if anyone has had these issues, if there is remedy and if I can hope that things will  eventually calm down. I'm scared if there is an allergic reaction to the dye, that this will go on indefinitely given I can't take the dye back out - salon says only way is with bleach which is not good to do either.  Or could it be the shampoo (never had an allergic reaction to shampoo before) given the itching and burning got worse this week than last when the single color process was done.  Any thoughtful advice or information would be greatly appreciated :)

You need to inform your doctor that the hydrocortisone cream didn't help your itching, that way he/she can give you something else to get to stop the burning/itching. My dad's a dermatologist and he recommends Free&Clear shampoo to pple who have itchy scalp in general but for your case of the possible allergic reaction, seriously tell the doctor it didn't work so that he can presribe something else.

I use "SeaBreeze" astringent on my itchy raw/burning scalp. Works great. Salons use this on little old ladies itchy scalps.

Most likely your scalp is very dry as a result of the processing.
