I regularly color my hair brown, and the last couple of times, my roots turned an orangey-red color.  It did fade after a little while, and I was able to tone the orange down with Aveda Black Malva conditioner, but it was still annoying.  I had a similar problem when I got lowlights at a salon years ago, and it's just starting to happen again.  Did I not leave the color on long enough?  Everything but the first half-inch from my roots turned out warm dark brown, but no red tones.

Do you re-dye your entire head with permanent hair color every time you color? This can result in the ends getting more and more dye on them compared with the roots.

You should be touching up only the roots when they need to be touched up.

Hi,

I did do my entire head, because the color usually fades away within a couple of months.  When it's almost the shade of my natural color again, I re-dye.  There probably is some dye left in my hair by that point even though it's not as visible, so that could be why my roots aren't the same color.  Next time I will leave the color on longer so it has time to process the new growth to the right color.  Hopefully that will fix the problem.
