QuoteReplyTopic: Where can i get hair like GLs? Posted: April 29 2005 at 8:58pm
HEy y'all , so i saw my best friend today and she got
extensions!!!! She told me she paid 3500$ for it !!!!!!!!!! then she
told me it was great lengths hair extensions. Not only was i still
shocked at the price but i was shocked at how real it felt!!!! i
really loved her hair , she got about 25 inches and the color is
superb , its liek a bleach blonde and doesnt even feel the
slightest damaged at all. So i was wonderign if you could buy
great lengths hair anywhere , like from the salon itself? and
would the hair realy cost that much or is it just teh application
that costs sooooooOooOOOoOOooOOOOoOo much? lol

LOL....you cant, unless you spend $3500 to get your extensions done by GL! You could always get Bohyme, Extensions plus, Glamourhair, or HisandHer cuticle for way less than GL, and you would probably be quite satisfied with any of those brands.

$3500?!?!? I'm sorry. No matter how many times I hear it, I STILL can't wrap my head around that kind of money for hair extensions. There isn't any hair on this planet that could possibly be worth that. And it's fusion besides!
I repeat: three thousand five hundred. Dollars. That's...that's...a nose job! 3/4ths of a tummy tuck! A whole lot of liposuction and..and...a boob job.
Sorry. Just had to share my continuing astonishment.

you beat me too it Syren....was just about to post it! Yeah its expensive but STILL cheaper than GL! Id say Bohyme is the least expensive out of the four, but still recieves great reviews. Blondie in another thread Bridget had some Bohyme that she offered to sell to you, I PMed her and told her that if you didnt want it that Id buy it from her since Ive wanted to try the Bohyme. I told her since you asked first Id wait to see if you wanted it.
Blondie, if you want top quality hair, then Extensions Plus sells some very nice European hair.
For blond European hair that's 23-25" in length, expect to pay about $150-$175 or so per ounce.
I have used EP's European hair on myself and several clients, and it's really nice stuff!
I don't know if your friend is aware of this, but GL hair cannot be reused again. Does she know she paid all that money for a hairstyle that will only last 3-4 months? Or did they lie to her, like most GL stylists do, and tell her that she can wear the extensions for 6 months?
Back in the day, I had GLs too; I paid $2,500 for it, and those bonds
ruined my hair. Yes, their hair is very nice, but it's absolutely not
worth the price; keep in mind that the salon is probably getting that
hair for $500 or so, and is therefore making $3,000 profit off your
friend (not bad for a few hours' work).
Anyway, while GLs hair is nice, I've had better for cheaper. The silky
straight H&H cuticle I bought, for example, was nicer. But all of
the brands mentioned get great reviews--Extensions Plus, in particular,
is somewhere you should check out, and Bohyme is a very good, rasonably
priced option.
I like Racoon the best www.Racooninternational.com but i havent tried extensions plus. Racoon do two types of HH though one is their standard hair and the other is their euro hair, the euro being the best. All the customers i have used Racoon with have had almost no shedding and it doesnt go frizzy or dry and wears well for months. The hair its self is pretty expensive.
i just did an install today with Extension Plus soft wear hair, its pre tipped and went in really well. The tips are real long and thick and i even needed to cut the tips off a bit however they fit in real nice and tight with the locs i use.
Tangles- The softwear hair if i remember right has a polymer cross linking treatment on which lasts up to 100 washes. Let us know how you get on with the hair

I believe that one of the "raisons d'etre" of this board is figuring out how we, the hair-addicted but not endowed, can achieve that beautiful look without incurring that cost, which, by the way, and I'm hoping you've figured out Blondie, is ENTIRELY UNNECESSARY. It boils down to 2 things: The materials (i.e. the hair itself) and the install.
1) THE MATERIALS. Start with good hair. (It can even be synth!) Honestly, as everyone has said, GL hair may be "the best". . .but then maybe not. Jenny's right. They're marking up the hair 3 times (minimum). It has to be THROWN AWAY after 3 mos. max. (And not really, it *could* be re-used but then their profit margins would go out the window. I've always wondered about this. . .David Gold's super-duper cashmere-dying-extra-care processing of hair that is only meant to have a life of 3 months? It boggles the mind. Answer: their hair isn't THAT MUCH better than what you can get from the sources we've mentioned here.
2) THE INSTALLATION METHOD. OK, so GL uses keratin bonds. Big whoop. We all know how to make those and install them. Contrary to GL's party line, they are NOT "the least damaging". They are easy to make and easy to install. Not rocket science. Kristin, in California, will do a whole headful of them for you at a fraction of what GL charges. Check out her work -- she rivals any GL hair gallery I've seen.
Buy yourself a ticket to Southern California, spend the day with her and STILL save yourself a bundle of money.
Or heck, get really creative and go to Seattle for the day, and have boogiemama do your hair. Once again, these results are as good as or better than any GL galleries I've seen.
She posts virtually no pictures on her web site. . . but this low-overhead extension powerhouse has done thousands of heads and is absolutely amazing.
OR, just go ahead and spend the $3500.
Sorry to carry on here. . . but . . . as I've said, we're all here trying to help each other out to come up with gorgeous, repeatable, affordable results, and I think we're doing it!!

Thanks Syren. I daresay it was almost poetic. . .all I would have had to do was work the word "manifesto" into it. . . and I would've brought myself to tears ! LOL. . .

Fina, how did you find Bettie? I remember when you did, but I don't think you ever told us how.
Finding a good stylist is the trickiest part of the whole beautiful installation thing - finding good hair, which is nearly impossible, is easier than finding an excellent stylist! Charging $3500 for a set of extensions - or even $1000 - is NO GUARANTEE that the stylist is any good. He/she is just expensive - took a class and got a kit and a certificate. The best stylists are the ones who do hair day in/day out and have their techniques down cold. And those are the ones who seem to be the most reasonably priced! Go figure.
There's always learning to do it yourself. As we've seen, there are women here who do their own and they're unbelievable - look at all the past pictures of amm's DIY installs and be amazed. The latest crop of DIY pictures are an inspiration - I know that I never EVER would have attempted to do it myself until I found this board in December, and then I did installs and take downs 4 complete times from Jan to March.
Now I want to do pinchbraids for a couple of reasons: the security and longevity of the bond, the safety to my own hair of the method, and the styling expertise of the stylist. But I'm still gonna put in shrinkies on the sides and completely jack with the front as always!
All said and done, I just don't see the necessity for the expense of GL. You can get gorgeous hair for a small fraction of that, and I intend to! Installation, hair, tip, and gas will be about $475.

How did I find Bettie ? Honestly, it was *total* complete LUCK. I found her through Google, but if it weren't for this board and everything I had learned, there is *no way* I would have tried her. . .I had been GL-brainwashed as well as had horrible experiences with wefts and other "integration" methods.
And I just have to say. . .whenever you're ready for a guinea pig. . .I'm there!!
Lisa, $4000 for a boob job! Cheaper than mine which was $6500
I have to agree GL hair is really, really nice. It's one of my popular sellers. I saw on ebay once somebody actually bidding for GL hair that was already used and yup there were lots of bids. The seller said she just had them removed.
Ok, the next best thing is 100% pure youthful virgin human hair- that's if you can get it. I made a custom wig for a 16 year old totalis client and bought the hair from an American 12 year old girl. Oh my gosh, her hair was one of the most beautiful I have ever laid my eyes on. It was long down to her butt and had natural highlights on the ends. Virgin all the way, fine and silky, with naturally sunkissed highlights.
So if you can get youthful virgin hair in your color and texture, wash it first really, really good, cut it up in ponytails and send it to metalgirl who will pretip it with her Mark Barrington system.
Young virgin hair is better than any hair I've ever, ever seen in my life and if you are a hairdresser, you probably saved those ponytails and best thing about it you probably got it for FREE in exchange for giving a haircut Now that's saving your thousands.
Good Luck! Happy Hunting!
If anyone knows an excellent source for 100% raw virgin hair. Please let me know. I'm always looking out for those!
Y'all really should check out Great Lengths latest propaganda on their hair processing. I'm not saying it's not true, I'm just, once again, marveling at the lengths they go to to produce such superior hair, then just. . .throw it away.
Click on "de-pigmentation", and "our keratin"
Oh yea, also check out their new multi-strand hydraulic application device. "New Technology"
Well...You gotta give it to them there marketing is wonderful! I was almost ready to get some myself...but then I came to! I did find it interesting that "only" temple hair is suitable for extensions.Hmmm? I too wonder...why can't it be reused? Must be that "special" glue...I mean polymer!
I would love to know how the multi technique works...how do you keep the "polymer" off the other hair? Do we have any GL affiliates on the board?
Oh...and I thought I'd end with a qoute from Greatlengths website: "If used properly and professionally, hair extensions may significantly change the way you look and give you the hair you've always dreamed of in no time. Our objective is to provide your hairstylist with the best possible tools in order to achieve this. You will never try another hair extension system after you've lived the Great Lengths experience."
