Yesterday and today, my hair has been shedding like a big dog - lots and lots of shedding. Then during a brush out session this afternoon, I lost TWO strands! 2 entire pinchbraids just came right out. None of my own hair came with them, of course. I've been dissecting them and looking over Rae's pinchbraid tutorial to figure out what happened and why they slipped. My stylist Serina did say that some may come out over time - called a 'blowout' - and sure enough. I'll tell you one thing; it sure explains the shedding. Since those 2 slid out, no more shedding.
Anyone else experience this with pinchbraids?

Man that sucks.I was under the impression from what i've read that there wasnt any shedding with pinchbraids.That was one of the biggest pluses for me with shrinkies.I didnt lose any hair at all.I would like to try out pinchbraids but dont want to if they shed.

i did lose about four with dollylocks (nyc), but those were around thre nape of my neck where they were so short she was surpised she even got them on, and so was i. otherwise, i never lost a pinchbraid of anyones, heathers (atlanta), kris (nyc), jenna (pa)... and no shedding. that i know of no slipping either.

Have you tried the wawa wefts? I don't think they shed awfully
but I certainly notice it. Ifyou've tried them I'd really
appreciate a comparison since this is my first outing with a
'permanent' weft.
And obviously it's unfortunate you have lost a few PB's. How big are the ones you have lost?

Oh cool.I'm going to give my hair a good long breather for now.But I loved my hair long.So I was thinking if I did strand by strand it would be pinchbraids with plastikhaar.I will probably only use human for clip ins.I think pinchbraids are much more realistic for my type of hair.I get too impatient with the glue.

Mocha, I do have the WaWa wefts but never wore them. So I guess the answer is...I don't know! They seemed to me to be very strong and well sewn wefts. I think a little shedding is normal, but I've had some hh wefts that were practically bare when removed, the hair shed so badly.
Mer, wow. You've never ever lost a pb from those stylists? That's really amazing.
After looking at Rae's tutorial, I think her second method is probably the most secure, and by the looks of it, mine were put in just straight 3 strand, no mixing of my hair and PH in strands.

hey syren - i haven't lost any with heather either (i've had 2 installs with her). i *think* that she does the simple 3 way thing, too. not the blendy bit - hard to tell really? i'll inspect more thoroughly later and update if different. heather did warn me that losing a few is totally normal. when you first said shedding i thought you meant your own hair.
That's interesting, I was practicing pinch braids for about an hour today just thought I would give it a try. I did three strands and crosed m the hair in to one of the synth strands. when I gave a good yank to the ends 2 of 6 came out.I have know idea why more practice I guess! I have to say I used a string of another color if the string matched I'm not sure I would be able to find those suckerskeep us updated I hope the rest stay for ya!

aw crumbcakes syren - can ya call serina, i mean perhaps this is just how your hair will start off with a few loose ones, but hella shedding seems too much? serina may have some advice or be able to help - customer service, yes? some hair folks have a certain amount of time that they'll fix stuff- usually first couple weeks?

Whoa...that's weird. I *never* have any shedding, and have only lost
one pinchbraid in a whole year (I think the string just snapped on that
one). This is by far the most secure method I've tried.
Mocha, I have shedding with the Wawa wefts. Not a troublesome amount, but comparable to regular human shedding while brushing. It kind of creeps out my friend when he'll go to pluck a hair off my shirt or something and realize it's fake hair. I guess just because it seems like such a "natural" hair kind of behavior, but it's not my natural hair.

Syren. I think it's reasonable to expect to lose maybe 5 braids over the course of the install. Not that you should expect it. Just think. You've got 200 braids in your head.... If they're all coming out in the same place, I'd say your extensionist was standing at a weird angle or something. For pinchbraids to work, you have to be paying attention to all the details.... Body position, amount of hair, balance of hair in the braids etc. etc. The braids also have to Not be so tight that they pull the hair out of your scalp and leave a bald patch. Yikes.
Do you have a friend that can put them back in for you?

When I used to get a 3/4 head of PB's (anything ranging from 65 to 80 braids) I would lose an average of 1 to 2 during the course of the 10 weeks before my next install. I think this is for two reason: 1) I used a boar bristle brush on mine and widetooth combs and I was definitely a frequent styler, although I only washed every couple days. 2) I preferred my braids to not be tiny. The bigger the braid, the more likely to slip. I have found the little ones are usually in the hair so good they are hard to even get out some times!!
99% of the time IF I did lose one, I would feel them slipping or they would slide down a couple inches and I would remove them myself using a cuticle scissors. I have never had any actually flop out, but there was one time when I looked down and my braid had slid all the way down so it was level with my cheek!! The way I look at it, I would prefer my stylist to put them in her normal way (and lose a few) versus putting them in SOO tight my head hurts for a week after install and/or little bald spots. Oh, and my PB's NEVER shed. Maybe a single strand every two weeks, not even kidding!!

Hmm. This is all very interesting information. I see that a few PBs coming out is somewhat normal, but no one experienced shedding, eh? That's what's got me stumped.
Last night I washed my hair and blew dried it to make it silky - it was getting rough from a week of wear and spray. That went well. But I did lose another PB for a total of 3. The one I lost last night was from the bottom and was a big strand, so Norskygirl's right about the big strands coming out. The other 2 were medium sized and from the middle of my head. I think I'm not that concerned about the braids coming out now as I am about the shedding.
You guys, it's unreal. I can run my hand thru my hair and pull out a clump of hair every time, and from every part of my head. It's shedding just as a weft would - a little bit but consistently. Because the hair is sooo thick it isn't making a difference, but it's annoying and messy and I don't dig it.
This is my first install with PBs and with PH, so it's certainly a learning experience. Everything about it needs tweaking next time, from the braids themselves to the amount of hair to the placement and even the colors! My mom said it was vampire-ish. Like that's a bad thing. But I do think next time there will be more colors, like 5, and all lighter (no more kaffee, for instance).
I don't think I'll call Serina - what can she do, really? Next time I'll ask her to do the braids a different way is all.
Thanks for all the great input, gals. Meanwhile, I'm back to shedding.

I've only lost one pinch braid in a total of a year and a half of wearing them, and that was a large braid attached to an area of my head where my hair is a bit thinner. The only shedding I've had is from that particular braid before it fell out. But never again did I have shedding or lose one. That doesn't seem normal.

hmmm. i see syren. the shedding thing is really not typical of my experience at all - even when i brush rigorously i don't have any shedding. i like jenny am confused - where's the string? for comparison my string is like a tight tight band at the base of the braid which even when i try to wiggle it with my fingernail doesn't budge. when i took out my last install the only way was to cut the suckers with a razor.
i guess my point about calling serina is - the PH is new for her, too huh? i'm sure she'd want to know how to tweak for future installs. i think most stylists like the feedback - she may have an idea about tweaking your current install. also i think you look lovely and not vampirish at all...although vampirish is kinda kinda vogue right now (a la angelina jolie) lol.

Oh right - the string. Forgot about that. Yes, it's right where yours is - at the base of the braid, and it is just like you said - a tight tight band.
You're right. She would probably like the feedback, so I'll give her a call this weekend.
Cheryl, did you say you've had 2 installs with Heather? I only recall seeing pictures of one...what gives?! And did you take down your entire head of PBs yourself?

i had my friend help me take down the first set because i have to drive about 3 hrs to see heather and i figured i'd save time that way...my friend, ahem, did a fairly fabulous job but kinda hacked in a few areas...the removal is fairly booby proof as long as you cut the string with a razor OVER THE SYNTH and not your own hair lol.
