if your hair grows the average amount of 1/2" or 1cm per month, then
you'd have another 7 times that much by feb 1, 2006. Now some
peoples hair doesn't grow that fast. And I have no idea how your
hair will do post cancer treatment.
In general you need a couple good inches to put in braids. 10cm
would be more than enough. But 5 I'm not sure. I figure
that's probably pushing the limit of how short you could go.
http://www.quinnster.co.uk/ has tons of good info.
she says 3" minimum so you'd be pushing the limits assuming all average growth.
I think if you go to an african braiding salon you could get away with an inch and a half of hair. Braids will last about 10 weeks. They will cost about 100 us dollars. Your head will be soar the first night. You will want to take advil. It will take some getting used to to sleep on. This is all based on African Braiding salons.
You can also do OPEN ENDED BRAIDS. Those give the look of loose hair but you have a braid attaching the hair.
If you don't go to an african braiding salon you will need more length like three inches and can probably get a discount. (Like if you went to someon on the board.)
Have you exer considered a wig? They make some really nice ones. I wear a 3/4 fall sometimes now, myself. (At least until you can do the braids?)
Thank you for the compliments on my pictures, and I am so sorry for what you have had to have gone through, especially at such a young age.
I have tried the Ultratress II for my trichotillomania client {she has between 1 cm to 8 cm on her head} and yup it works! It even helped her stop the urge from OCD. I haven't tried the last 2 methods, although I have seen and felt them in person and look 'almost - very' similar.
Also for my post cancer clients, a hair integration {it is a cap system with holes and hair growing from the holes, see this pic...} works really great for your 1 cm hair and once they have more growth I graduate them to the hair extensions {the ones I mentioned on top}!
I'm not crazy about braids for the hair. They hurt and are too bulky in my opinion. But I support whatever decision you have!
PS. so for an intergration you can have as little as 1 cm and it should last you up to 8 weeks. For the tape extensions- up to 8 to 12 weeks. They are reusable. As far as maintenance you'd have to follow your stylist's advice since she/he may use bond adhesive or sewing. But yeah, you can wear these like if it was your own {swimming, bathing, styling}
The smaller the inidividual braids the easier they will stay in. But on th eflip side the more you will pay.
But braids are pretty easy. Definitely something you could tackle
on your own. Well I'd reccomend an extra set of hands from a
friend. But still yes very DIY friendly if that is at all a
concern. Probably the most DIY friendly of all extensions methods.
extra vitamins are probably a good idea for making sure the hair is good and strong so it can hold things up without breaking.
Also a good extensionist won't give you a hard time about fixing any
that did manage to fall out. they'll either tell you ahead of
time that your hair is too short for them to work with (something I
seriously doubt will be true in february) or repair anything faulty.
Also you will want to find someone who has experience with hair similar
to yours and a style similar to what you want to leave with.
And Charlene is right that there are several options between now and
then. Many of which actually look like natural hair. And
braids do take some adjusting. But I feel like the first week is
almost always painful with extensions. It requires a lot of
ibuprofen and creativity in sleeping positions.
Also, if your hair is just growing back in after the chemo, the hair may still be in an fragile state, and I would not want to put any extra stress on that hair.
I think that the braids will put too much tension on your fragile hair.
I was thinking the same thing as metalgirl.Braids might not be right for right now. That integration peice in cybermane's post looks perfect.Good Luck with whatever you decide.
