QuoteReplyTopic: Perm Will Not Grow Out Posted: September 17 2005 at 7:23am
Has anyone heard of this? Every hairstylist I go to doesn't believe me, they tell me that I had to have curly hair to begin with.
I had a perm 6 years ago and it just won't grow out! My hair is dark and thick, I'm half Native American and my hair was always straight as a board, and now I've grown it out long (to my waist) hoping that the weight of the hair will straighten out the curls, but whenever I let my hair dry naturally it just curls right up again.
I've been to the salon and tried chemical straightening, well it worked when she did it because she blow dried it straight, however, when I washed it a couple of days later it was just as curly as when I went in to the salon. What a waste of money.
Can anyone help? I want my straight hair back!

Hello ShannaLea The perm could have altered the natural state of your hair. I'm not sure what could be done to get it back straight. That's the thing with chemicals somethimes they help while most of the time they cause problems.

Sometimes something happens that changes a person's hair type, like going through puberty or growing older, or even certain drugs. But a perm won't change it. The perm is applied to the hair and doesn't have any effect on the follicles that the hair grows from.
Just looking for a few good hair slaves - is that too much to ask?

Thanks for the suggestions. I tend to agree (even though I'm not a hairdresser by any means) with the chemical damage idea. The waves in my hair match exactly the waves from my last perm. Boy do I wish I hadn't done that!

sometimes, depending on the type of perm you have it can stay in longer but 6 yrs! yer sometimes the solution can change the direction of the hair follicle which causes the hair to grow at a different angle which makes it curly or straight i know you can get your hair permenantly straightened but my stylist told me it could be upwards of $600 for shoulder length hair!

hey, i got a perm in 4th grade, my hair being incredibly straight
before that. i am now 29 and still have "naturally" curly
hair. over the years i have asked many people about this and the
best answer they came up with is that the perm brought out the natural
curl that was already imbedded. they said since your body does go
through changes during certain times of your life it probably would
have started getting wavy and curly on it's own, which i found hard to
believe since it was soooo straight before. my sister was born
with naturally curly hair but hers is much curlier than mine. i
think you will learn to enjoy curly hair as i have. you don't
have to do much to fix it if you wear it curly but you still have the
option of straightening it so people like us have the best of both
worlds. cheer up!

I really appreciate the words of encouragement, however, my hair is long, down to my waistline, and it's incredibly thick.....with these curls, well waves (since it's so heavy), it sticks out! I mean I look like bozo the clown. And it's not as healthy as it used to be. I just want my old hair back!
One hairstylist even tried to convince me that my hair had been curly before......HELLO?! I think I know what my hair looked like for 30 years and I even have pictures to prove it. I just can't seem to get a straight answer as to why this happened and am wondering if it will *ever* grow out!
I do appreciate all the comments and they are all wonderful!

I'm confused is your hair growing from the roots straight or curly?
I have also heard that your hair texture can change after puberty, diets and so on. But are you trimming your hair as it grows to get rid of the permed section?
