Welcome back, Strawberryfine! Even though your avatar pic is
small, I can tell that your hair has grown longer. Yay! (I
use tinypic, FWIW)
Good idea to protect that wet & damp hair from the freezing cold, gossipqueen!
Sunsailing, I haven't heard of (or seen the ad for) the "winter
protection" line of products. I'd like to know specifically how
and why they make their claim that it's better than other company's
products.

Sunsailing,I've seen that commercial! I wish I trusted Pantene products more though.
As for the frozen hair thing, it's happened to me before and it's not pleasant. Fortunately, mine never broke off, but I wouldn't suggest chancing it to anyone.

Has anyone seen the new commercial by Pantene? They are now marketing a shampoo/conditioner line made for "winter protection". I saw the commercial yesterday and thought of this thread

Dave, thanks for that information on hair freezing and
breaking off!!! I had no idea, never really thought about my hair breaking off
like that. I live in Toronto and we
get some cold winters def won’t be heading out with wet hair.
Thank you so much! I read this post yesterday and took very special precautions today because we are expecting snow and I'm going out Christmas shopping.
"The steps I took":
1. Phytojoba shampoo ala Dave's Dilution Solution
2. Extra Biolage Conditioning Balm in shower
3. A little more BCB left in
4. Jojoba oil on top layer and ends
5. Scarf
6. French beret with my hair twisted up inside in a loose bun shape (all hair covered) so that when I pull it off my hair tumbles down; feels sooo good!
Trying to get a new avatar pic; forgot the websites I uploaded to:
what do you use? Miniphoto, photobucket or other?
TIA!

Strawberryfine! Welcome back! It's so good to see you. I'm so excited that your hair is longer and you'll be sharing photos hopefully??? Gee it's been such a long time! Hope your Thanksgiving was warm and eventful.
Hellfrozeover.......how FANTASTIC is your hair???? So thick and shiny!! It's like chocolate fudge syrup
You should be so proud of how it looks, its testament to your careful
treatment and pampering of it. Well done girl!!
Agreed! Thanks for sharing these new photos, HFO!

Your strands can quite literally freeze and break off. It's
happened to me. Years ago when I lived in a northern clime,
washed my hair and went outside (15F). It froze quite quickly and
sections of it snapped off. Holding hairsicles (hair strands
encased in ice) in my hand was a shock. Never again did I go
outside in extreme cold with wet hair.
maye726,
Hot oil treatments aren't actually oil. When you oil your hair
with jojoba or the like, you are doing something different than when
you use "hot oil" (unless you've made the hot oil yourself and actually
put some oil in it that is). The ingredients of VO5 hot oil are:
Mostly water, no real oil. If you use jojoba or another type of
actual oil, you can leave it in your hair (you would use very little,
like a couple of drops so it doesn't make it look oily or get on
anything - if you want to wear an oiled updo, you can use more since it
wouldn't show anyway). Most people oil from the ears down to
avoid the scalp looking oily.
Conditioning treatments at salons are often silicone conditioners,
which make hair feel soft but must be clarified off on occasion to
avoid damaging the hair.
Hope this was helpful.

Thanks! It's a little under the weather right now as I've just found out a semi I used back in September had a tiny bit of peroxide in it and I'm trying everything to get the small amount of colourant out and keep it in good condition.

I was told that oiled updos are good. I use extra virgin oliveoil just now as I have some in the house.
Photo excuse! My hair is only 1/3 of the way down my back but it's really thick so oiled updos work really well and I like the look of my hair in a bun.

My hair also dries out more in the winter months, I have tried the hot oil treatments they work for a couple of days and that is about it. My hair is waste length and it looks dried out. Any other sugggestions? I have had a moisterizing treatment at the local beauty salon which helps but is not cheap.
Tdouty... you got it on the nose! At least this is what I heard. I don't know if there is a significant enough amount of moisture in hair for this to happen, but at the very least, it will make the hair shaft expand (which usually isn't good). I'm not taking my chances.
susan, I think you may be onto something maybe my hair
doesn’t like humidity. I wear my hair straight but its naturally curly so when I
go out it just curls up while some may stay straight and on the most humid of
days it use to look like I got hit by lighting ( that was before I discovered
the wonders of a flat iron) but as soon as the weather cools off I have the
best hair days ever! The colder the better for my hair.

This may sound weird but in the winter months my hair looks
better and healthier then it does in the summer. And I live in Toronto
so we get some pretty cold weather here. But for some reason my hair does
better in cold weather and not so well in the heat wave we had this summer.
