QuoteReplyTopic: Thinking about layers Posted: January 11 2006 at 4:57pm
My hair is just soooo thick and it's lying in a solid block with the odd damaged hair poking out horizontally round my hairtye line. I'm thinking about getting a few layers but keeping the length. Any ideas? I wouldn't get any shorter than an inch below my jaw and I'd keep the length.
As far as what I think, the main thing is to get the ones you want.
Draw a picture of the kind of layers you want. Or print one of your
pictures if you have any and then draw on those. It might help to have
a visual aid to say I want them here and here and not all over if
that's what you want. Or showing them all over if that's what you want.
You are the boss so if you decide to get them do your best to get them your way.
Personally, I have always preferred layers in my hair. I know alot of ppl think they are bad bad bad and can't wait to grow them out, but I'm thinking that I will maintain my layers as my hair gets longer. I have average thick hair, but my waves/curls make it look very "triangular" if it is all one length. I find the layers give it movement and enhance my natural wave/curl.
If you don't like the way your hair lies, then layers could be a good answer. Have them cut quite long though, just in case you don't like them...that way you'll be able to grow them out quickly. I agree with Purplebubba, if you are going to go to a hairdresser to have them cut then be as graphic as you can with your explanation. Don't let them cut off more than you want!!! You have such stunning hair, that if any stylist got scissor happy with you I might have to personally travel over there and avenge your hair
Personally, I am beginning to like mine. I have layers that are not cut, but they grow in naturally. The more towards the front, the shorter my terminal length... so it's just one big taper. It is much much easier to make a bun when the coil gets thinner towards the ends. Especially with your thickness I think it would be really practical.
I have also had layers, I have a love/hate relationship to them.
I don't like it when the layers are to short to make a ponytail and there are bits sticking out everywhere.
But they do make hair look nice and you can get natural waves by not doing anything.
Think it through because once they are there they are very hard to get rid off.
Let us know what you decide to do

I'm still considering it. Because it's winter, you could start a fire with the ends of my hair so I'm not happy! Might just get an inch cut off or I might get layers. I'm not sure. I'm convinced I was at 25 inches last year but I've been going crazy with it and it's more like 21 inches now. Not sure if I want to go as far back but I might have to.
Purple Bubba: I won't get chunky layers or any shorter than below my jaw
Anais: I know what you mean about buns and stuff so that would be a good idea although layers will prevent me from putting in braids for a good while.
Rini: Thanks for the compliment but I think he'd already be dead by the time you make it over!
Vicky: Sounds like me with my fringe. One minute I want rid of it and one minute I have scissors in my hand putting it back in.

Im the same with my fringe aswell. The second i've cut them i regret it
but then when they have grown a few inches i get this strange urge to
cut them again
Layers is a great way to get rid of damaged hair without losing alot of
lengh. I might consider doing it my self if i get to tired of my dry
ends..

Did you get the layers, HFO, or is the fringe a different issue? I bet longish layers would look very glamorous on you with your hair being so thick and shiny.

oh the fringe dilemma!!!! It's the bane of my existence
I just never know what to do. I have equal amounts of reasons for it and against it. Right now, I am inclined to grow it out again.....and so it goes on!

That's very brave...I am impressed! I would be far too scared to do it myself. How did you get the courage to try it for the first time? Weren't you worried that it might look bad??

But seriously....I just cut a bit here and there and gradually got it looking the way I liked. I wasn't too worried about stuffing it up as my fringe is uneven in it's style anyway and I know it will grow back pretty quickly.

I was hoping that. Right now it looks a tad dry and washed out. If I could get it to be as shiney as it looked before then I'll be happy. I have to kick myself for ever touching those straighteners and semis though. Maybe henna is the answer to the problems although I like my colour. If there was an invisible henna it would be soo cool!

Hi HFO, I think that MissRini mentioned in another post that there is, in fact, a neutral henna. I am thinking about trying it. There is a website about henna: http://www.hennaforhair.com/ which may have some info about the neutral variety. If I find out where to buy the neutral henna, I'll send you a message....

Fringe annoyed me so I modified it so it's invisible bangs and I can have it whenever I like or brush it away to make it look all the one length. Much better! I think I've changed my minde on layers since my last trim.
Rini: Your new hair picture is amazing growth and it looks great!
