QuoteReplyTopic: Weft vs. Strand installs Posted: January 25 2006 at 12:49am
I'm an advocate of offering several options to my clients and would like to add weft installs. I have a few questions of those of you who offer both. I understand that time is a factor and weft installs are less expensive because they take much less time...how much do you charge? How much hair do you typically order for each, 4 oz.? However, if weft installs only last a maximum of 6 weeks, isn't it about the same cost-wise?
Please give me some thoughts on one method over the other, and for what type of client. Thanks!
Most of my "weft" clients are clients that are juggling their time i.e. they don't have much, they don't have time for lengthy installs and lengthy take downs. Some people don't like the "hat" feeling with wefts. I'd say 95% of my clients go with single strand.
You can't say till you've spoken to the client how much hair to order, for a start you don't know how many strips you can fit in their head and whether you'll have to double up if they like it really thick xx
I think the weft installs biggest advantage is for DIYers. Its easy to do and not so time consuming for someone who is doing their own head.
Providing weft installs in the salon probably wouldnt be much difference cost wise in the long run, since they would have to be re done more frequently. But as Amanda says, for those who dont have the time for lengthy takedowns or installs, the wefts installs are a great option.

Does the tape only last 6 weeks or are they retightened due to grow out? Are up-dos possible or would they show? What percentage of your clients want this method over strands? Thanks Tangles...I appreciate your expertise...
I have a good friend who has been wearing extensions for over 10 years and isnt stopping soon. She even had a period after 6 year constant fusion wear that she had alot of hair loss and bald spots and had to take them out for 6 months and use Rogaine. She still has very small permanent bald spots and she says it just never grew back in.
She swears by the tape/liquid adhesive (lg i think) method that she gets installed at the salon. She goes in every 4 weeks and spends about 3 hours and $250. I've seen her loose a piece here and there but no big deal, her extensionist cuts the wefts in little pieces (1-2 inches) before installing. I don't understand this part, but ok lol. I put my wefts in big strips and that worked great, and even if one part became loose they stayed in. Mine were very comfortable, and if it weren't for the severe pain and hair loss when I finally removed them after 6 weeks (with the exception of a few small areas that became loose they weren't budging) I would stick with this method. It only took about 40 minutes and looked great. This was the cheap latex glue, not the LG. Aussie 3 minute miracle "deeeeeeeep" treatment worked much better to remove this than any remover including the brand remover and any other kind I could find.
I actually think that a weft/strand install would be perfect, and I am going to experiment with this soon. I installed the weft/shrinkie method on my sister with about 50 strands on top. We will see how it holds up. The combination of wefts on the bottom and single strands with shrinkies looks perfect since you save alot of time but still can hide the strands easily near the top. When I try it I'm going to use the tape/adhesive method which looks much easier than the weft/shrinkie method.
