QuoteReplyTopic: grocery bags on our hair... Posted: February 16 2006 at 11:26am
i was washing my hair yesterday, and was getting ready to do a deep conditioning. i couldn't find my usual plastic cap, and while rummaging around under the sink, i found some products in a plastic grocery bag..This brought back a memory.
I was going to a beautician in La Jolla..she was always "cutting corners" when it came to beauty equipment. I saw her adding water to hair products before she put it in my hair..I asked her if it was okay to do this, and she said "Well, the products they sell are too concentrated in the first place, it won't hurt to dilute it a bit"..I believed her.
Well she apparently came up with this idea as well..after she washed my hair, put on the conditioner, she walked over to a basket full of empty plastic grocery bags. Without ceremony she proceeded to put it over my head, wrapped my hair in it, tied a knot in the front, and put me under the hair dryer..
it didn't dawn on me, the magnitude of what she was doing until i looked around while sitting there..everyone else had the same type of bag on their heads..reading magazines or sleeping under their dryers..
this woman drove an E class mercedes, has a shop in La Jolla (exclusive part of San Diego), came from the Islands and constantly complained about "American Women" and their attitudes..and here we all were sitting there, with grocery bags on our heads..paying her very good money, to keep up her mercedes, and exclusive location..
i look back on those days in her shop and ask..."what was i thinking?"

Wow, that's bad. She owns a mercedes and can't even afford heating caps.....oh so cheap! I mean, its ok to put a plastic bag on your head at home, but not when your at a salon where your paying big moo-lah.

When you said she talked about the Americans' "attitude" I would have let her have it, and told her that she can go back to the islands and get paid doing the hair of more pleasant people, because the Americans wouldn't bother her anymore with their "attitude" problems.
And I would have told all of her customers (if I could find them).

Or, I would have told her that I'll be happy to take my attitude elsewhere. Then I would have gotten up, and walked out. (Unless I had a chemical in my hair).

I personally wouldn't mind if a hairdresser was a little cheap so that she could have the finer things. Heck, that's what a LOT of business people do, which is one of the things that make them good businesspeople. The whole point of being in business is to keep as much money as you can in your pocket. AS LONG AS SHE GOT THE JOB DONE RIGHT, the bags wouldn't be a big issue with me! Chinese restaurants use the cheapest soy sauce, fish restaurants use the cheapest tartar sauce.
But that's just my opinion and the way I am.
I had an issue with the first hairdresser mentioned here, because she had the nerve to berate her customers. If she used the BEST plastic caps, but talked about the customers in a negative manner, I still would have gone elsewhere.

i felt i could have handled the bag on the head if i was being done by someone like baby dimple.. i think she seems to have the personality to pull off "the grocery bag conditioning treatment" easily..but what made me think about the whole scenario was this..apparently, this beautician that i mentioned didn't particularly care for American Women..plus, she used "diluted" products..which i'm not sure is a common practice..is it?
i remember seeing clients walk out of her shop..some of them looked great..but then there was always the occasional client that basically "can't be helped"...she would do what she could to style their hair..but at the same token..after she was paid, and the client was gone..she'd laugh her butt off..right there in front of everyone..
i finally "woke up" after i got screwed with her "great lengths" extensions.she was "just certified..and put them in, but when it was time to take them out..she was supposed to use an epoxy remover and this special type of "nutcracker"-like thing to break the epoxy..she didn't want to pay for those and wound up using wire pliers, and a type of nail polish remover.if the hair didn't come out easily, she just pretty much yanked it out with the extension..and guess who came out of the shop looking like tweetie bird... $1500..is a lot of money for that..i have no idea what they are charging now..
I left her shop..and never came back..but received a phone call after i didn't schedule the usual appt..she was pissed that i basically went elsewhere..($1500 sounds like a car note payment on a mercedes)...and was told that i would be back, ''just watch and see"...
that was over 7 or 8 years ago..thank gawd..my hair has grown back since then..and i have yet to fulfill her prophecy..

I use plastic bags too...economical for me so I use it. Femmemuscle, sounds to me like you got out of that salon just in the nick of time. You might have left bald, so you did the right thing.
lol, that's sorta funny: she complaining about american addtitue. Why they heck is she complaining? she's in our country and she has all the privlages in the world to do back to her country where everyone is absolutely perfect. I don't think americans have a bad adtitude...we are just picky, but if your paying money, you should get what you want!

But, still, Layla, if the bag does the job, I personally wouldn't care. The rest of what she did is what would have kept me from going back, even if she used the "right" head covers.
Femme, I'm glad you stopped going when you did. (I wish you could have stopped earlier.)

I think that there is nothing wrong with cutting corners in a business in order to save money, but there is a proper way of doing it. I do use grocery bags at home, but I also but the pack of plastic caps for 10/1.00. Not a bad price!! I agree that is does say a certain something about a business when you are paying a certain price and you're wearing a free grocery store bag (that you don't know what it was carrying) on your head. It makes you feel jipped. Especially if she's riding away in a brand new car. I would think if she needs to save money, the first thing she would do is down grade her car or some other pricey item. There's nothing wrong with having nice things but when you have a business, the customer comes first!
