QuoteReplyTopic: ??For all you "combo" installers... Posted: February 21 2006 at 1:45pm
I just finished a weft install 5 days ago and am not fully satified with the results. I love the fact that I have more hair on the back of my head and that installation was so easy with Pro-Tac; but having the wefts on the sides is decidedly uncomfortable and flat looking. So I was thinking about changing to silicone-lined microrings on the sides and possible the top row in the back but am interested in how many other people find that they get the best results by combining more than one method on a single install.
I have read that several of you have done extension installs using a combination of methods (fusion/shrinkies, wefts/fusion, etc.). Please tell me what methods you combine and why.
I've been struggling with a similar issue. Because I'm wearing my
extension hair shorter--a long layered bob to the shoulder-- I need more
volume in the top and around the sides. The Pro-Tac make the hair in
this area lay very flat. This is particularly bad for me because I also have
some 4 1/2" layers on the top I'm growing out. These layers end right
where the tapes go flat, so I struggle with looking somewhat mullet-y.
I've been using rollers and back-combing to blend the layers and get the
volume where I need it. With a little work I'm very happy with it.
This weekend I installed a row of shrinkies on each side with EZ Fusion
strands that I heated and rolled into stick hair. I can't install them in the
back because I have a weird hair thing that shows anything intalled high.
My sides are way better with the extra hair on the top, but I'm finding the
hard clumps of hair in the shrinkies to be tricky to hide in my fine hair,
plus they feel lumpy and uncomfortable.
For my next install, I'm planning on installing double wefts everywhere
except for the very top row. I'm also going to put that top row even
closer to the part. Then I'm going to try smaller single strands that I've
pretipped with E6000 along the very top. I have ordered some silicon
microrings to try because I've read they lay flat against the head.
I've got to say that in spite of all this my hair is 100% better even with the
struggles I've been having than it has ever been in my life. I'm viewing it
as a work in progress, more of a hobby than a chore, at least until I find
what works best for me.

I most often use a combo of shrinkies and Extendmagic tips.
The reason for this is that shrinkies are great but even they can be seen in the temple and sometimes in the crown or bang area. With Extendmagic tips, you can make really small "micro" strands and use where shrinkies really cannot go. This gives clients versatility in what they can do even in the bang area.
I also like the Extendmagic tips because the residue is so easily removed and the tips can be use over and over and over!!!
i use silicone microrings and shrinkies. both of them hold great for me, but really the main reason why i use both methods is because: 1.) i feel much better about installing microrings on the back of my head because it`s harder for me to see what i`m doing, so i won`t burn myself... and 2.) i use shrinkies on the top and sides because they aren`t as visible in my hair as the microrings would be if i used them for the entire install.

I just flat-out CANNOT do the back of my head. Further, nothing but fusion works in the front. Heat seals show; pinch braids slip, never had a good experience with shrinkies.
SO. . .my last install was all human hair, done with pinchbraids in the back, fusion on the sides and top. I'm done with pinchbraids for a while; too bulky for my baby fine hair.
This time I'm doing a human/plastikhaar install, using fusion in the very front and plastikhaar/heat seals everywhere else.
I think that as long as the "final" look matches and blends, and you're comfortable and have the look you want. . .use whatever methods you want!!
For ME, getting a really long, full, back of the head is the key, and I just prefer to have someone else do that, using a fairly heavy-duty method. If I could wear wefts I would, but again, they show through the 4 strands of hair I have on my head. ;-)

I have already decided to do some sort of combo for my next install.
I am about to go about a month without extensions (my parents are coming for their annual visit and I wouldn't hear the end of "why do you want long hair?" and "how much did that cost?"). Even though I am turning 46 (yikes!) on Saturday, my mom can still intimidate me! I just decided that I just really don't want to discuss my hair with my mother on this visit.
But, the day they leave for home...they hair is going back in!
