Yes a lot of naturals use coconut oil in their hair and really rave about it. You can add it to your leave in or conditioner - it is very versatile. I personally prefer jojoba oil but I've made a pomode with shea butter, aloe vera gel and coconut oil and my hair loves it like nothing else.
I am not in the US so someone else can help you out with internet ordering but you can generally find coconut oil in your health store or minority grocery shop. Make sure you go for extra virgin coconut oil - that is lovely.
If you have a health food store located near you, maybe you could ask your mother to take you there. Ordering a product offline may seem cheap until they add the shipping and handling price onto the merchandise.

If there's a large Indian/Pakistani/Bangladeshi population near you, there should be an Indo/Pak/Bangla grocery store. They ALWAYS have coconut oil, they put it in their hair for shine and also cook with it.

Just add to your hair for shine, or to your scalp for extra oil.

I don't use it at all, but I've used it a couple of times before. I don't see why it can't be used every day, it's very light and after a couple of days, it basically disappears from your hair.
For pre-poo? I can't say. As far as I could tell, it was only good for oiling, and Asian people I know only use it for shine, not necessarily for anything else. I couldn't tell if it had any conditioning properties on my own hair. Someone else may have more experience with it.

You can use it as a prepoo if you like. If you exercise, its great to put on your hair because the heat from your scalp will allow you to smell the coconut instead of all the BO (body oder) from the surrounding exercisers....Sorry just thought I would put that in there.

I saw this on a website, coconut-oil-uk.com
Coconut Hair Oil
It is wonderful to use as a hair conditioner. Beauticians who are familiar with coconut swear by it. It softens the hair and conditions the scalp. Using the coconut oil as a pre-wash conditioner can rid a person of dandruff better than a medicated shampoo.
Coconut oil, a natural ingredient in the highest sense of the word, has always been recognized for its quality of strengthening the structure of damaged, devitalized hair.
Coconut oil lubricates and softens the hair shaft through the action of minerals such as magnesium, potassium, calcium, and iron.
